Saigal Saab acted in 29 Hindi movies during his career of 15 years. Of these, 21 films were produced by New Theatres. In an unbroken association from 1932 to 1941, Saigal Saab appeared in 20 films by this production house in continuity. In 1942, Saigal Saab moved to Bombay, and started to work with the production houses there. Post 1942, there is only one more picture that is produced by New Theatres in which Saigal Saab appeared. This is the 1944 production My Sister. From the unbroken string of 20 films with New Theatres, the last one is Lagan produced in 1941.

Judging by the songs of the movie, I can guess that this movie “Jhoola” (1941) was a highly entertaining movie. The movie was a romantic comedy movie and the movie in fact served as the inspiration for later movies viz “Padosan” (1968). How inspired “Padosan” was from “Jhoola” (1941) could be gauged from the fact that the lyrics of the iconic song Ek chatur naar karke singaar of Padosan(1968) is inspired from the song Ek chatur naar karkar singaar of “Jhoola” (1941).

Mukesh was brought to Bombay (now Mumbai) in late 1930s by Motilal (a distant relative) who had seen him singing a song at Motilal’s sister’s wedding. While at Bombay, Mukesh got the opportunity to act and sing in a movie called “Nirdosh” (1941). This movie also had Nalini Jaiwant.It is interesting to note that Mukesh first acted in movies in 1940s, whereas his grandson (Neil Nitin Mukesh) is acting in movies more than six decades later. Tum bin kal na aawe mohe

Here is a song which must be perhaps the oldest piano song in Hindi movies. This song sees K L Saigal meeting a man (Can anyone tell who he is) and Kanan Devi. He decides that Kanan Devi is going to sing a poem of K L Saigal. Kanan Devi sits on the grand piano and sings this song.

When I was a young kid, I did not like old songs, especially those sung by K L Saigal. With time,as I became more mature (?), I began to tolerate, and subsequently began to appreciate K L Saigal.
