A few days back I found myself translating a song from Achhut Kanya for Raja who is subtitling the movie for the famous DVD restorer Tom Daniel.

The movie is one of the most celebrated ones of Hindi Cinema, an early classic, and an Indo-German collaboration that starred Devika Rani and Ashok Kumar. However, what I didn’t know was that it contained a dance by Mumtaz Ali, the father of Mehmood and Minoo Mumtaz. I found Mumtaz Ali so captivating, his dancing and singing so natural and so impromptu that I went off on a google fired discovery of facts about him. As is often the case, any information on artists of this era is not easy to come by. After a day of looking high and low, I managed to unearth only one thing, that he was a scion of the royal family of Arcot.

In my younger days, my uncle used to play M S Subbulakshmi’s (MS) LPs of Venkateshwara Suprabhatam or Vishnu Sahastranamam early morning every day which I used to resent as it became virtually a wake-up alarm for me. But as days passed, I not only started liking her renditions, some of its verses got stored in my mind.

In my native place in Mangalore district (and perhaps other places in India specially in villages), it was a tradition in almost every house that all family members would assemble in the Pooja Room soon after the dusk for singing some devotional songs. In a joint family system, this tradition also worked as a means of creating bonding among large family members. After shifting to Mumbai in early 50s, with a nuclear family and a city culture, this tradition slowly got discontinued. But my mother would sing at least a couple of devotional songs every day after dusk while doing her kitchen chores. One of the devotional songs which I had often heard in my childhood was in the Konkani language, my mother tongue. I was very much impressed by the lyrics and the tune of the song.

This is my first attempt at reviewing a song, so please bear with me :). I have been glued to the blog off late and am trying hard to catch up with all the posts on the blog. I have, but hardly reached 1/3rd of the way in my journey so far. I am so looking forward to the journey of discovering these gems, thanks to our fellow members.

About a month back, I stumbled upon a song ‘aankhen to huyi band magar dard jagaa re’ from the film BEGUM (1945) sung by Ashok Kumar. Until then, I had neither heard of this song nor of the film which had Ashok Kumar and Naseem Bano in the lead roles. I liked the song so much that I must have listened to it umpteen times. The song is written by Gopal Singh Nepali and set to music by Hari Prasanna Das (H P Das) whose name also I heard for the first time. From the Indian Film Trade Data website, I observed that H P Das had given music to 10 Hindi films between 1935 and 1948 including 2-3 films jointly with Manna Dey.

During my younger days, I got acquainted with some of the popular music directors of the pre-partition days mainly through listening to some of their bench-mark songs on Radio Ceylon. Khwaja Khurshid Anwar is one of those names.

“Nikaah” (1982) was a movie which was produced and directed by B R Chopra. The movie had Raj Babbar, Salma Agha, Deepak Parashar, Asrani etc in it. Those were the days when Indians regarded “phoren” stuff and people as objects of great curiosity value, even if “phoren” only meant neighbours. Thus Pakistani and Bangladeshi artists were welcomed with open arms in Hindi movies. Runa Laila, Salma Agha, Nazia Hasan were some of the artists who benefitted as a result.

“Bhai Sahab” (1954) is a movie I know well from my days of listening to “Puraani Filmon ke geet” on Radio Ceylon. The songs of this movie sounded like they were sung by K L Saigal but in reality they were sung by C H Atma, a K L Saigal devotee. The most well known song from this movie, viz Nazar ne keh diya afsaana mere pyaar ka has already been discussed in the blog.
