“Khandan” (1942) ,a Dalsukh Pancholi production, was one of the biggest movies in Hindi movie industry when it was released in 1942. This movie was inspired from the movie “East Lynne” (1931) which in turn was based on a 1861 novel of the same name written by Ellen Wood. This movie dealt with a topic that was considered quite sensational at that time.

As I discover more songs of ‘Bandhan” (1940), I cannot but help feel that this movie must have stolen the heart of the movie goers during its time and Leela Chitnis would have become a heart throb of public, in case she was not one already. What a lovely performance from her in this movie. In this movie, she plays a playful and cheerful girl who is forever prepared to play a prank or too.

Street Singer (1938) is a landmark film, that was a big success in its own time. The film is a trendsetter, and a musical bonanza beyond par. Produced by BN Sircar for New Theatres, Calcutta and directed by Phani Mazumdar, it had the two foremost singing stars of that era, paired for lead roles. The star cast includes KL Saigal, Kaanan Devi, Jagdish Sethi, Bikram Kapoor, AH Shorey, Boken Chatto, Chamanlal, Abdul Rehman, Braja Paul, Ram Kumari, Nirmal Bannerjee, Rani, Satya Mukherjee. Interestingly, the music maestro Khemchand Prakash, also played a role in this movie, as a stage hero working in the theatre.

Saigal Saab and Suraiyyaa were to be paired together in 3 films between 1945 and 1947. Tadbeer (1945) was the first such film in which these two singer-star sensations came together. Tadbeer is a social drama produced and directed by Jayant Desai. The film presented an impressive star cast that includes Saigal Saab, Suraiyyaa, Mubarak, Jillobai, Rehana, Salvi, Reva Shankar, Amina, Shalini, Raja Joshi and Shashi Kapur. (This last name is not the Shashi Kapoor that we are all familiar with).
