Hullo Atuldom
I have undertaken a rather difficult task- writing a post to remember the legendary Guru Dutt & trying to pay a tribute to him in my own humble capacity as I am someone who got acquainted with the actor, director, producer, choreographer, and writer much after his time on this earth.
He was born on 9th July 1925, in Bangalore, to Shivashanker Rao Padukone who was a headmaster and a banker & Vasanthi, a teacher and writer. At birth he was called Vasant Kumar & his family was, essentially, Konkani Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmins; but as his family shifted to Bhowanipore (Calcutta) when he was a child, he learnt & spoke fluent Bengali. (That possibly explains why I initially thought he was a Bengali). He had a sister Lalita Lajmi- (a painter) and 3 younger brothers, Atma Ram (a director known for ‘Umang’, ‘Aarop’ etc.), Devi (a producer known for ‘Masoom’, ‘Aakrosh’ etc.), and Vijay. Vasant Kumar’s name was changed to Gurudatta Padukone following a childhood accident, the belief being that it was an auspicious choice. Director & screenwriter Shyam Benegal is second cousin of Vasant Kumar a.k.a. as Guru Dutt & Amrita Rao (actress of the new generation) is the grand daughter of Guru Dutt’s cousin.

In a recent article, I had discussed some Hindi film songs which were ‘inspired’ from foreign language songs/music. In this article, I will take up some Hindi film songs and music which have become ‘inspirations’ for some foreign language songs. Incidentally, in Western musical parlance, it is called ‘sample’ songs/music in which a part of the original song/music tune is sampled in their songs.
In the last few days, I have gone through many foreign songs as well as small clips of a few English films on the video sharing platforms in which Hindi films songs/music have been sampled in music videos as well as in films in the background. A few samples of Hindi film songs/music used in foreign music/film albums is discussed in the following paragraphs.

In the context of Hindi film music, we have often heard the word ‘plagiarism’ for copying tunes, melodies, orchestrations and even the lyrics. The plagiarism in Hindi film music has become more pronounced from 1980s onwards during which some of the new generation of Hindi film music directors faced the allegations of plagiarism in their compositions of many songs. It came into open when two songs of the same tune, ‘thamma thamma loge’ in ‘Thanedaar’ (1990) and second, ‘jumma chhumma de do’ in ‘Hum’ (1991) were released within a short gap which were said to be inspired from ‘tama tama’ by Mory Kante (1988). Some of the music directors have dismissed the allegation of plagiarism by saying that such song compositions have not been copied but have been ‘inspired’ from original sources.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) Part-2 –post-5 (1989)
(Celebrating Pancham’s 86th Birth Anniversary 27.06.2025 – 9)
——————————————————————————————————
We are celebrating Pancham’s eighty-seventh birthday today (27 June 2025) on this musical blog. In the previous post I had mentioned about the ‘declining period’ of Pancham as it is said to start with the eighties. During this period he also had health issues and people also started deserting him. But, as I mentioned there were few people who stood by him even in his bad days and they willing to work with him. Pancham was also detemined to bounce back. One of these persons who stood by Pancham’s was his fan turned producer-director Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Chopra was planning ‘Parindaa-1989’ and he had approached Pancham. When he met Pancham he found him in a stage of low self-esteem. However Vidhu Vinod Chopra insisted that only Pancham would give music to his film and he convinced Pancham to do so. Pancham in turn went on to extend help to Chopra when he didn’t have money to pay for the recordings.
