“Bombay To Goa” (1972) was a Mehmood Productions movie. It was produced by N C Sippy and directed by S Ramnathan. The movie had Amitabh Bachchan, Aruna Irani, Mehmood, Shatrughan Sinha, Lalita Pawar, Manorama, Anwar Ali, Nazir Hussain, Kishore Kumar, Dulari, Mukri, Keshto Mukherjee, Sunder, Asit Sen, Agha, Manmohan, Dilip Dutt, Indira Bansal, Usha Iyer aka Usha Uthup, Babban, Kammo, Birbal, Randhir, Raj Kishore, Jerry, Darshan, Praveen Paul, Shobha, Oscar Unger, Junior Mehmood etc in it.

When I was growing us in late 1960s and 1970s, I was only aware of a few festivals when we had holidays. There were days like Holi, Deewaali, Raksha Bandhan,Durga Puja (Dashara), Id, Chrishmas etc. Then there were a few days thaat were known as days, viz Children’s day (Jawaharlal Nehru’s bithday), Teacher’s day (Radhakrishnan’s birthday) etc.

Kishore Kumar, popularly regarded as a happy go lucky individual was deep down a sensitive soul. After making a couple of light hearted movies, Kishore Kumar began to make some serious movies on sensitive issues. But unfortunately the Hindi movie audience were not ready for such movies. In fact even today there is only a very small audience for serious and sensitive off beat movies.

“Laawaris” (1981) was Produced and directed by Prakash Mehra. The movie had Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman, Amjad Khan, Suresh Oberoi, Bindu, Raakhee Gulzar, Om Prakash, Ranjeet, Ram Sethi etc in it. The movie was criticised quite badly by the movie reviewer of the magazine that I used to read those days. The critic wrote that the best scene in the movie was one that had the words “The End” in it.

The first solo song that Kishore Kumar sang in his playback career was for Dev Anand in the movie “Ziddi” (1948) under the music direction of Khemchand Prakash. Then S D Burman, his mentor used his good offices to get Kishore Kumar to give plaback for Raj Kapoor in “Pyaar” (1950). But from that time onwards, Kishore Kumar sang for himself or for Dev Anand, in case it was a Dev Anand movie with S D Burman’s music direction. I can think of one more exception during 1950s though where Kishore Kumar sang for someone other than himself or Dev Anand. It was the iconic song Din hai suhaana aaj pahli taarikh hai(Pahli taarikh) (1954) which was picturised on Raja Nene.
