While looking at the picturisation of this song, I wondered why this song does not qualify to be called a Mujra song. As it is, Mujra songs are those songs where the clients are ordinary folks or spoilt nawaabs. If the same dance is performed in a royal court, it becomes a royal court (Rajdarbaar) dance.

Today is the festival of Lohri in north India, and here is a song from the film Veer Zaara for this celebration.

The culture of India, irrespective of religions and regional diversity has one very strong common thread. In all parts of this culture-rich land, the basic celebrations abound with a deep seated respect for the seasons and the natural elements of sky, wind, fire, water and the earth. In the spring season, there are festivals connected with Basant, the celebration of spring. In the monsoon season, there are Teej festivals that celebrating the rainy season. There are festivals that celebrate the sowing of crops, and there are festivals that celebrate harvesting. The Navratri celebrations, that occur twice in the year, herald the onset of summer and the winter seasons. Every event relating to seasons and to the celestial movements in the skies – we have a reason to celebrate, and we have a festival to celebrate it with. No wonder that the culture of this land is simply a continuous celebration of life, each day, every day.

It was directed by P L Santoshi and the star cast had names like Rehana, Om Prakash, Mumtaz Ali, Paro, Ratan Kumar, Chandabai, Raj Kapoor, Rajendra, David Abraham, Tabassum, Radha Krishnan, Samson, Vijayalaxmi, Ramsingh, S. I never watched “Naya Zamaana”(1971), but I read the screenplay of this movie. Yes, those were the days when the screenplay of movies used to be published and they were eagerly lapped up by movie lovers. I read the screenplays of not only this movie, but also that of “Aasheerwaad” (1968), “Kati Panag”(1970), “Bobby” (1973) etc. These screenplays also had stills from the movie. These books described the story so vividly that one could visualise the movie in the eyes of the mind. Much later, when I watched “Bobby”(1973), I felt like I had watched this movie earlier while in reality I had only read its screenplay.
