Mukesh and his Composers – 50
Did Mukesh recommend the composer duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal to Raj Kapoor for Bobby (1973)?
Well, we may never know the credible answer to this question, but then I found this interesting video clip in which Shri Pyarelal ji is narrating about the circumstances under which they first came to know about the offer from Raj Kapoor, which was conveyed by Mukesh. Apparently, Mukesh was just a messenger, and the video reveals that if not Laxmikant Pyarelal then the offer would have gone to Kalyanji Anandji or RD Burman. On hearing this LP did grab the offer and the fame created by Bobby’s songs is now well known.

Thus, what factually transpired between RK and Mukesh before he met LP is not known. However, a great musical connoisseur that he was, I suppose the thought of replacing Shanker by someone else must have originated from the showman’s instincts and then seconded by Mukesh. At many places on the net it is firmly asserted that Mukesh was responsible for the composer change but I have not come across any substantiation for the same.
Strangely, Mukesh has no sound bites in Bobby (1973).
Coming to today’s post, it’s again a celebrated and much famous collaboration of Mukesh with LP. I was under the impression that the tally is around a hundred but was rather disappointed to learn that it stands at only 68. SJ easily crosses 100 and is coming to the blog sooner rather than later. KA is “work in progress” and I feel their tally could be nearer to a hundred.
But for today’s post let us stay with LP. It’s common knowledge that ‘Parasmani’ (1963) was their first released film. What is relatively less known is that they had 3-4 films which remained incomplete and never saw the light of the day. One was titled ‘Hum Tum Aur Woh’.
Editor’s Note:
LP worked on four films prior to ‘Parasmani’.
They signed their first contract as independent MD duo for the film ‘Hum Tum Aur Woh’, which remained unreleased.
Second film was ‘Piya Log Kya Kahenge’, also unreleased. They used one of the tunes of this unreleased film for the song “Chaahunga Main Tujhe Saanjh Savere” in film ‘Dosti’ (1964).
Their third film was ‘Chhaila Babu’. Music for this film was composed prior to ‘Parasmani’, but this film was delayed and released only in 1967.
Their fourth film was an untitled project, part of a multi film contract. It ran into financial difficulties and was shelved, never completed.
Also, interesting to note that LP got their first pay packet, working as assistants to C Ramchandra for the film ‘Devta’ which was released in Tamil (1955) and Hindi (1956).
I faintly recollect that Mukesh had a song or two in these incomplete films also. But strangely not much is known about these films despite a few biographies and dedicated blogs on the composer duo. The traces of any songs that may have been recorded are also largely unavailable.
Anyway, he did have a very popular duet, “Chori Chori Jo Tumse Miley To Log Kya Kahenge” with Lata Mangeshkar in their debut film ‘Parasmani’ (1963) and was regularly featured in many of their films. After 1963, only 1965 and 68 do not feature any song of Mukesh for the duo. But a few songs sung by Mukesh featured in films released after his passing away in 1976 also.
Of course, the very last song that Mukesh recorded in his career before he left for that fateful tour of US-Canada was also for LP. More on it later. 😊

Glancing through the table, it is difficult to trace songs that are not very familiar. Such was the magic of the combo. Songs from films such as ‘Sant Gyaneshwar’, ‘Anita’, ‘Milan’, ‘Patthar Ke Sanam’, ‘Dharti Kahe Pukaar Ke’, ‘Do Raaste’…Well, let me stop listing the films here as I am literally copying every film from the table.
Suffice to say, the songs from almost all the films that Mukesh sang for LP remain evergreen and in active memory of music lovers.
Compared to SJ and KA, LP were relatively new, but the popularity or the hit ratio that we often speak of Mukesh’s songs remained undiminished with LP too.
Speaking of few of the films, Anita has a romantic as well as a sad number.
Milan, a musical blockbuster had songs aplenty with only Mukesh and LM rendering all of them. I have already written on how LP stood by Mukesh for ‘Milan’ in my post for the song “Jaane Na Jaane Tu Hi Na Jaane“. I reproduce the relevant portion of the post on the film ‘Milan’ for ready reference of the readers.
It was 1967, nearly 3 decades since Mukesh started singing in HFM. Yet, his mettle was again put to test. The film was ‘Milan’ (1967) for which the production house of L. V. Prasad, decided to rope in emerging composer duo Laxmikant Pyarelal (LP). This was in spite of their successful association with Shankar Jaikishan for ‘Chhoti Bahen’ (1959), ‘Sasural’ (1961), ‘Hamrahi’ (1963), ‘Beti Bete’ (1964) etc.
LP were already in huge demand with independent composing of more than 20 films in just 4 years since they made their debut in 1963 with ‘Parasmani’ (1963). Quite a few of these 20 odd films were blockbusters.When LP decided to engage Mukesh as the only playback singer for Sunil Dutt in the new film, Prasad productions were not all impressed and even demanded a replacement.
LP were uncompromising with their choice of Mukesh and threatened to quit the film if they were not allowed to have their say.
Mukesh was retained as the sole male playback singer in ‘Milan’ (1967) for Sunil Dutt and the rest as they say is history. The midas touch of Mukesh was undented. In fact, he rose to new heights with the musical blockbuster. After nearly 6 decades, what remains of the film in active memory is the glorious songs rendered by Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar. Mukesh had 3 duets with Lata and two solos.
One duet was of course the title song rendered several times in happy and sad moods. The second duet featured Mukesh rendering singing lessons to Lata in the film. The third duet being a happy and chirpy village fair song featured Sunil Dutt and famed actress Jamuna.
Of the two solos, one was Mukesh’s forte, a poignant number and another a lullaby which could put even the Gods to sleep.
Further, many films such as ‘Farz’ and ‘Gora Aur Kaala’ have only one duet with Lata Mangeshkar in the film and the respective song stands out in the film.
‘Chaahat’ has a catchy and breezy foot tapping number, which was not exactly Mukesh’s forte, but he pulls it off effortlessly.
‘Pushpaanjali’ has a song on the uncertainties of man into the unknown after death.
Many songs of Manoj Kumar literally had the baton of Mukesh singing for RK sort of passed onto him. For reasons of unavailability of songs yet to be posted on the blog, I am yet to cover RK as well as Manoj Kumar the two actors with whom Mukesh was associated the most. Sometime later, let me see what I can do about it.
I have intentionally avoided describing every song from the above table as most of them are popular. Readers are requested and encouraged to go to the blogposts for each song for the complete details.
And then, we have a song that Mukesh sang for RK film’s ‘Satyam Shivam Sundram’ (1978), the very last of his career and life itself for the Godly voice fell silent forever thereafter. In fact, the film released in 1978 was dedicated by Raj Kapoor to his beloved friend Mukesh Chand.
For some very strange reason, the song remains unposted on the blog so far. I have already stated this fact when I covered Mukesh’s songs for Shashi Kapoor in my post for the song “Main Tumse Pyaar Karta Hoon, Tumhaara Kya Bigaadunga“. I reproduce the pertinent para from the post on this surprise.
19! Well, do I need to write anything about it. It is well known as the last song sung by Mukesh for HFM before he left for America along his son and Lata Mangeshkar for a concert and never returned. That it remains uncovered so far was very surprising for me. I request the editors to reserve this song for me as it can be posted as one of the last songs of Mukesh to be covered on the blog.
My request to the editors in the last line remains as we are yet to cover all the songs of Mukesh on the blog. I remain hinged on hope that the figure of 4 digits does not elude for Mukesh.
And then, I had the Dharm Sankat.
Dharm of following the rules, ethics and regulations of the blog.
Sankat of learning that all but one song of Mukesh for LP remains to be posted.
With great difficulty and constant pestering, I urged the editors to allow me for a one-time exception.
I am very grateful that my request is accepted, although it took me a few weeks to follow up.
And, I had my rather sophomoric reasons for the request as enlisted below.
- The verses in today’s post are not yet posted despite both film version and 78 rpm version being posted and written in detail.
- The context of today’s short song in the film is different.
- The verses are different.
- The picturization is on Sharmila Tagore and not Sanjay Khan.
Thus, the first excuse is the strongest followed by some pretentious ones. In fact, in the comments section, I had written that “something” still remains. Here is my comment.

Interestingly, film soundtrack and the 78 rpm record version have two each entirely different stanzas. However, the mukhda remains the same.
Further, in the film version, there is a short song wherein the first stanza is again heard.
And then, one more Mukesh’s background song picturized and depicting the woes of an actress on screen.
In view of all the above, a very unique song indeed.
I am happy that ‘something’ has come to use for today’s post. I am sure readers will easily conclude that the verses ultimately conclude with the main mukhda of the multi-part song something which we consider as one on the blog.
I stand guilty as assumed and have put up the reasons above.
Thus, one last song of Mukesh for LP remains to be posted, and we will see when to finally introduce it on the blog.
Quoting Robert Frost, there are “miles to go” to reach the 4-digit figure of Mukesh on the blog and the endeavor shall continue. Unabated.
