“What a find. Such a rollicking song.”
This the comment by our own Ava Suri ji, that I find on the YouTube upload page of this song. Yes, ‘rollicking’ is just the right word to describe the tenor of this song. By the way, the YouTube channel on which this is posted is titled ‘The Edwina Channel’. And for those who are familiar, this channel is managed by Dan Thomas (aka Thomas Daniel). Dan has been actively collaborating with dear Greta Memsaab, for cleaning and sprucing up digital videos of old Hindi films, subtitling them and putting them up on the YT. Our dear Raja ji is also part of this effort.

The 25th of October is an important date for Hindi film music lovers. In fact, not just for them but for lovers of Urdu poetry too. For it is the anniversary of passing away of one of the industry’s foremost lyricists, Sahir Ludhianvi, who was highly regarded not just for lyrics but also for his poetry. In fact it was his poetry that brought him recognition early on – he just extended it to the film industry.

नभ: स्पृशम् दीप्तम्
Touch the Sky with Glory
What an appropriate motto this is, for the flying heroes of our national force that is responsible for the defense of our nation’s skies, and the keepers of our aerial security. The Indian Air Force, the aerial arm of our armed forces, celebrated its 85 anniversary yesterday – 8th October, 2017.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY to all our readers. May the 70th Anniversary of India’s Independence bring happiness, prosperity and peace to people of this great nation.
On this occasion, I present to you a Marching Patriotic song, in praise of the Motherland, from the film ‘Sipahsalaar’ (1956). Sipahsalaar means Chief of Army or Commandant . The name of this film is not well known because the lead actor, the composer or the director were not famous at that time. I said ‘ that time ‘ because in the next one year, this film’s hero – Shammi Kapoor would come in a complete makeover of appearance (without his funny unbecoming moustache) and style of acting with the film ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’ (1957). Later on, he wrote a glorious chapter in the history of Indian cinema.

hum kahin bhi hon
chale aayenge
What an extraordinary promise this is.
We had a small get together of music lovers, earlier in the day today. And for the day it is, part of our conversation revolved around Rafi Sb, and his persona, and his legacy. ‘God’s Own Man’ is the phrase expressed by one of the gathering. Certainly, all people are God’s people. But then some are special. They are ‘God’s Own People’. Humble and giving – the two traits that stand out as shining beacons in this industry that is famous for cutthroat competition, and the rule of money power. So much corruption and cruelty bleeds into it, and in turn, generates more cruelty and heartlessness.

Today’s song is a fun song from the film Khota Paisa (1958). It is sung by Rafi, Shamshad and chorus. The film was one of those in which Johnny Walker was the Hero opposite Shyama. Johnny Walker was on the peak of popularity during that period. The film was produced and directed by M.Sadiq, under his own banner Sadiq Productions, Bombay. Music was by Madan Mohan.

This song is the 100th duet of Rafi Sb and Geeta Dutt to be posted here on our blog.
As I was browsing the net earlier in the day, checking for articles and source material on Guru Dutt, I came across this she’er (couplet) which was written by the poet Kaifi Azmi in 1964, on hearing the news of Guru Dutt’s demise.
रहने को सदा दहर में आता नहीं कोई,
तुम जैसे गए ऐसे भी जाता नहीं कोई
माना की उजालों ने तुम्हें दाग़ दिये थे,
बे रात ढले शमा बुझाता नहीं कोई
rehne ko sadaa dehar mein aata nahin koi
tum jaise gaye aise bhi jaata nahin koi
maana ki ujaalon ne tumhen daagh diye the
be-raat dhale shama bujhaata nahin koi
It is true, no one comes in this world
To reside for ever
But the way you departed
No one even leaves that way
Granted that the brightness of flame
May have inflicted painful burns
But still, no one douses the lamp
Before the night comes to an end
Remembering Guru Dutt, the vital genius of Hindi cinema, on his anniversary today (9 july 2017). Had he been alive, he would have been 92 today.

Today (30 june 2017) is the birth anniversary of Kalyanji (30 june 1928-24 august 2000 ) of the well-known Kalyanji-Anandji music composer duo. Or K-A, in short. I’ve written here on the occasion of the anniversary of several artistes. Composers, lyricists, actors, directors. In fact most of my posts here are to do with some occasion or the other.
