Those were the days when Disco music was becoming the rage and lyrics were losing their importance in such songs. During those days, we fortunately still had the kind of music in some movies that we had grown up to love all these decades. These were off beat movies, smaller budget movies, family values movies- in brief “non mainstream movies”.

I love watching old movies (pre-1980, just to clarify!) and of late I’ve been watching a whole lot of them. Kala Pani, Kala Bazar, Kashmakash, Chhote Sarkar, Pagla Kahin Ka, Kasauti, Ma Beta, Waqt, Ek Bechara, Cobra Girl, Swayamvar, Raja Aur Runk, Jeene Ki Raah are just some of the movies I watched in January this year.

“Ghar” (1978) was the story of the ordinary life of an ordinary couple, which was a refreshing change from the larger than life stories depicted in most mainstream movies.

I had never heard about this movie called “Ek Thi Reeta” (1971). This obscure movie had Vinod Mehra and Tanuja in lead roles.

“Anuraag” (1972) was not a movie that stood much of a chance at the box office, given its serious topic (blind heroine) kept majority of movie watchers away from this movie. The songs of this movie had no such handicap, however, and the songs were all runaway hits.

Considering that a large number of Bollywood songs are on the subject of love, it comes as some surprise to note that the subject of this love, be it a boy or a girl, is not named by his/her proper name, rather he /she is addressed by common nouns viz Saajan/ Sajni, mehboob/ Mehbooba, Aashiq etc.
