Today (22 september) is the birthday of Ranjeeta, an actress who made her Hindi movie duet in 1976 with “Laila Majnu”. Born in 1956, she acted in movies like “Pati Patni Aur Wo” (1978), “Ankhiyon Ke Jahrokhon Se” (1978), “Aap To Aise Na Thhe” (1980), “Satte Pe Satta”(1982), “Teri Kasam” (1982) etc. In late 1970s and early 1970s, she paired up with Mithun Chakraborty in several “spy” movies.

Dinesh Thakur (8 august 1947 – 20 september 2012) was an actor in Hindi movies who was active from 1970s to 1990s. He was seen in movies like Mere Apne (1971), Anubhav (1971), Rajnigandha (1974),Parinay (1974), Kalicharan (1976), Ghar (1978), Naiyya (1979), Griha Pravesh (1979), The Burning Train (1980) etc. In addition, he also wrote the story and screenplay of “Ghar” (1978). “Ghar” (1978) won the Filmfare award for best story.

Today (22 september) is the death anniversary of Durga Khote (14 january 1905 -22 september 1991). Many younger day movie watchers may associate her with mother and grandmother roles, but she was one of the earliest leading lady of Hindi movies and one of those who paved the entry of women from respectable background to Hindi movies.

Kaise naache Mayuri

“Naache Mayuri”(1986)” was a Hindi remake of the Telugu “Mayuri”(1984). These movies were based on the real life story of Sudha Chandran. Sudha Chandran, a dancing enthusiast, had lost one leg in an accident. But she braved all odds and used artifical limb (prosthetic ‘Jaipur foot’) and continued to pursue her first love viz. dancing and became a leading dancer. She was invited to perform in India as well as abroad. Her fame spread and she got offers to work in movies. Telugu movie “Mayuri” (1984) was made on her own life. This movie became a big success at the box office. It was subsequently dubbed into Malayalam and Telugu with the same title. Later on, this movie was remade into Hindi as “Naache Mayuri” (1986).

I am aware of a movie called “Dard” (1947) which had that immortal Umadevi song Afsana likh rahi hoon dil e beqaraar ka. It turns out that another movie of the same name was released in 1981 too.

Today (21 september) is the death anniversary of Tarachand Barjatya (10 may 1914 -21 september 1992) who was the founder of Rajshree Productions and he produced several well known and well loved movies. Rajshree Productions is still going strong even after his demise.

Going through Atul’s index of movie-wise songs I was astonished to find that so many film titles begin with “Mr.”. One “Mr.” title though I didn’t find there and that was Mr. Romeo (1974) . Till 2003 I hadn’t even known that such a movie existed till I saw its score on Music India Online. R. D. Burman has given the film a good score. He usually did that to for-us-now obscure films. It seems to be the launching vehicle for the leading lady Rinku Jaiswal. I think this was her only movie.
