Memory is a strange thing. On one hand one can remember hundreds of movies, their plotlines, who starred in what, and so many obscure details about them. We can remember so many songs, their complete lyrics, who sang it, what is the picturization, everything. But right when we need our memory to actually work – exams and birthdays – it goes on strike.

I have thought up an idea of doing a series on ‘desert songs’. Unfortunately most of the famous desert songs are already posted, and I am left with a residue of songs from the 80’s only. I have myself written the post of the songs of ‘Laila Majnoon’ (1976) most of which are in the desert. I request readers to help me in this regard and provide the name of such songs picturized in the desert from 50’s and 60’s .

Kedar Sharma, a career that started with a paint brush, and then went on to scale exceptional heights of creative cinema, and in the process helped to start many a famous careers in the industry. The eminent showman, Raj Kapoor, revered him as his guru. Many a famous artists made their debut in his films – Madhubala, Geeta Bali, Mala Sinha, Bharat Bhushan, Tanuja etc. He was the inspiration and the encouragement for a whole generation of performers and directors in the early decades of the industry.

I grew up with the music of late 1960s and early 1970s. That was the time when R D Burman burst into the scene like a tornado. When things settled, the musical scene was totally rearranged with old order finding themselves becoming irrelevant in no time.

We in this blog initially discussed just movie songs. Once I discussed a K L Saigal song and it turned out that it was a non film song (NFS). Several regulars of the blog then lobbied for the inclusion of NFS in the blog. And that is how NFS began to be discussed in the blog.

“Bahut Din Huye” (1954) was a Gemini Production movie. It was directed by S S Vasan. The movie had Madhubala, M K Radha, Agha, Kanhaiyalal, Savitri, Gulab, Ratan Kumar, Lalita Pawar, Pushpavalli, Kailash, Swaraj etc in it.

“Sansaar” (1951) was a Gemini Pictures production. It was directed by S S Vasan. Most actors of this movie were from South Indian movie industry. The movie had Ishwarlal, M. K. Radha, Vanaja, Mohana, Agha, Meera, J. S. Kashyap, Anil Kumar, Kalla, Ratnappa, Pushpavalli, Swaraj, David Abraham etc in it.

Lata Mangeshkar sang only 11 duets with G M Durrani. 6 out of these 11 have been sung in 1948-49. In the book ‘Lata Mangeshkar …. in her own voice – Conversations with Nasreen Munni Kabir’ (2009), she has mentioned that her first song for Naushad was a duet with G M Durrani haay chhore ki zaat badi bewafaa for ‘Chaandni Raat'(1949). At that time Durrani made some personal remarks about the necklace she was wearing. She did not like his remarks and brought this to the notice of Naushad. Knowing that she was a sensitive person, Naushad replaced Durrani and took Sadat Khan for her second duet in the same film. However, this duet was edited out from the film.
