The first time we hear of Khayyaam as a music director is in the 1951 film, ‘Pyaar Ki Baaten’. In this film, he shares the honors of music composition with Bulo C Rani. But certainly, this is not his first film as a music director. He has been active in the industry since 1948, albeit has was using a different name. In 1947-48 when he came to Bombay looking for opportunities as a music director, some producers and friends suggested to him not to use his original name, and so he adopted a pseduonym – Sharma ji. Under this name he composed music for three films, before reverting to his original name with the film, ‘Pyaar Ki Baaten’.

The first five years of Mukesh’s career, from 1941 to 1945 were sketchy, and not very productive. The available records show that he sang 14 songs in six films during these five years. His singing did not capture much attention, and Mukesh was a discouraged man, contemplating to leave Bombay and return home to Delhi. But then in 1945, ‘Pehli Nazar’ happened, under the baton of Anil Biswas. And after the release of ‘Pehli Nazar’, Mukesh’s career was on the up and up.

The purists among music lovers often like to keep a cut-off for their listening habits. ‘I don’t listen to songs later than this year,’ they often say. I don’t disagree with those cut-offs. There are times when we just don’t want to listen to the cacophony that our music often descends to. But then, like a proverbial ‘keechad me kamal’ a beautiful song pops up among all this noise. The sufiana songs from the present times are meaningful and pleasing to the ear. The songs written by Gulzar and Javed Akhtar, set to tunes by AR Rahman are beautiful and worth listening to again and again.
