23rd December was the anniversary of passing away of two artists that have a significant contribution to the Indian cinema – singer Noorjehaan and music director K Datta.
Noorjehaan, born as Allah Wasai in 1926, was one of the eleven siblings born into a family of musicians and singers. Her parents, Madad Ali and Fateh Bibi encouraged her and at the age of six years, she learnt music at the feet of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. When she was nine, her talent caught the attention of Ghulam Ahmed Chishti, who brought her to stage programs in Lahore, in which she appeared as Baby Noorjehaan. She gained attention in Lahore, and was invited to sing and to play child roles in Punjabi films being produced in Lahore. She appeared in films like ‘Misr Ka Sitaara’ (1935), and played the role of child Heer, in the Punjabi film ‘Heer Sayaal’.

‘Phanda-1975’ was one of the first few films screened at our colony club when the weekly screening of films was started there in 1975-76. The name of this film was vague in my memory, and I do not remember either the film or its’ star cast or songs. Might be an obscure movie of its time. Now, after so many years when the film’s name knocked my memory, I take on search for its songs and other details.

Sometimes people end up giving really deep insights to you about yourself. But during the conversation, you do not grasp it and brush it off. This happened to me during my first jury at NID. First let me explain the concept of jury. Jury is what happens, when instead of exams, the college decides that a student should have only half an hour every semester to display every scrap of work they did for 4.5 months and justify that he/she did learn something. If one manages to do that, then they give you a decent grade and pass you for the semester. Nahi toh, Thakur toh giyo!

The wait has been prickly. Eyebrows have been raised. Murmurs of disquiet are being heard. The posts have been delayed on the blog. Important posts, important anniversaries are overdue. All due to me. There is so much that has happened, that should have been covered at least two or three days ago. Multiple posts are in progress with me, and also posts and requests for anniversaries are piled up and waiting in the mailbox. On my side, I have a string of very plausible ‘excuses’ in my defense. But those details can wait. 🙂 The primaries first – it is six hundredth milestone that had to be breached, that is holding up everything else.

The story written by K Bhagyaraj had a star-cast consisting of Jackie Shroff, Vinod Khanna, Sridevi, Poonam Dhillon, Om Shivpuri, Saeed Jaffrey, Satish Shah, Subiraj, Amita Nangia, Anjana Mumtaz, Mahesh Anand, Moon Moon Sen, Mushtaq Merchant etc.

Its been about a month since I last sent any write-up to Atul. (I remember the last thing I did was send the lyrics of a song to Atul and Sudhirji for Sanjeev Kumar death anniversary). Not that I was short of ideas. It is just that various factors contributed to keeping me away from the blog. I have more than a month’s posts to catch up with. First it was diwali. Then my dearest niece’s engagement which took me to Chennai for a weekend. (Actually I had thought I will be able to call up our YYIIPPEEEE!!!! master when I was in his land but that also didn’t materialize. Sorry YYIIPPEEEE!!!! Master)

The reality of life that is – the reality of relations, the reality of social variances, the reality of the difficulties of life that will incessantly continue to overwhelm, and above all the realities of personalities. More often than not, it is the personal motivations, personal desires and dogmas, personal fancies and choices, that manifest as roadblocks and potholes on the road to satisfied love. The year would have been 1966 or 1967. Yash Chopra’s now iconic film ‘Aadmi Aur Insaan’ was on the drawing boards. Yash ji approached a very up and coming actress of singular beauty with an offer for the lead female role. And the young lady, all of maybe 22 or 23 years old, declined; with reason that she was quitting films. The role then was taken up by Saira Banu. The film, with some delays, got released in 1969, and went on to be a successful box office earner in its own right. The lady who declined the role, appeared in the same year in another blockbuster of a movie that actually catapulted her, and her leading man in that film, to heights of stardom.
