Suraiyya was already a star (in singing as well as acting) when Lata was struggling to find a foothold in Hindi movie playback singing. When she established herself in late 1940s, she soon became the number one and never looked back since.

Music was introduced in Hindi movies as soon as these movies began to talk (viz 1931). The first decade of talking movies saw actors singing their own songs, though playback singing too had started by 1935.

“Shair” (1949) was a movie starring Suraiyya,Dev Anand, Kamini Kaushal, Agha,Sulochana etc. This movie had some nice songs in it and I have already discussed four of them.

I have mentioned in the past that “Singaar” (1949) has many songs in it. I have not really counted them, but I am sure that there are more than a dozen great songs in it.

“Dillagi” (1949) is a movie starring Shyam, Suraiyya, Shyam Kumar,Amar, Sharada,Amir Bano etc and out of these names, I am only familiar with Suraiyya and to some extent Shyam.

“Gajre” (1948) is a long forgotten movie by now. This movie had Motilal,Suraiyya,Geeta Nizami etc in it.

Arzi hamaari ye marzi hamaari

Most music lovers, including yours truly, are aware of only one song from “Naukri” (1954) and that song is the evergreen Chhota sa ghar hoga baadalon ki chhaaon me. But there are other songs in it that are created with the same amount of love and care and those songs are also wonderful to listen to, if we only care to listen to them. These days I am digging these songs out and I am finding that these forgotten songs are gems.
