Today’s song is from the revolutionary film- Duniya Na Mane-1937.
The Prabhat Film Company led by V. Shantaram could no longer sit back with their period films and decided to bring about social awareness through films. They took a gigantic leap with their historic production “Duniya Na Mane”. A great social classic, the first one on the empowerment of women, it denounced the dowry menace and the evil custom of old men virtually buying young brides. Eight decades have gone by and I am still waiting to see a film as revolutionary, daring, genuine and sincere in addressing a social issue related to the treatment of women in Indian society. Considered to be one of the best films made in India, it has left a permanent mark on the pages of film history and also on the minds of the audience of my generation. No wonder, highly acclaimed by the media it was then shown at the Venice International Film Festival.

Today’s song is from a very old film -Jeevan Prabhat-1937.
The film was made by Bombay Talkies. It was directed by Franz Osten. The music was by Saraswati Devi and the Lyricist was J.S.Casshyap. The film was Debut film for the lead actor Kishore Sahu and actress Renuka Devi. The cast included Devika Rani, Kishore Sahu, Mumtaz Ali, Maya Devi, Chandraprabha (sister of Saraswati Devi), Renuka Devi, Prithviraj Kapoor and many others.
In the initial era of Talkie films, Calcutta’s New Theatres and Poona’s Prabhat were the most well known filmmakers. They used to make films on social issues. Particularly, Prabhat was famous for keeping their films centred on the Reform themes like,Dowry, Child Marriage, Second Marriage, Cast difference etc.From the mid 30s one more company came into limelight and that was Bombay Talkies- founded by Himanshu Rai and Devika Rani. They also followed the trend and films on social issues like Untouchability, illiteracy etc were made.

The cast of the film included Sardar Akhtar, Surendra, Yakub, Harish, Arun Ahuja (Govinda’s father), Jyoti, Vatsala Kumthekar, Sunalini Devi, kanhaiyalal Chaturvedi and others.

Today’s song is from a 90 year old film – Manmohan-1936.
The film was made by Sagar movietone and it was the 3rd Directorial film for Mehboob Khan. The music was by Ashok Ghosh, a very well known name in Bangla filmdom- who had a very enthusiastic and talented assistant- Anil Biswas. The cast of the film consisted of Miss Bibbo, Surendra (his 2nd film), Yaqub, Ashalata (real name Mehrunnisa, who later married Anil Biswas), Ram Marathe, Zia Sarhadi, Bhudo Advani and many others. Lyricist, dialogue writer and story writer was Zia Sarhadi who also did a small role in this film.
You will be surprised if I tell you that this film would not have been made if K L Saigal was not acting in films of New Theatres in Calcutta ! Strange, but true ! Let us see how….

#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #

The undiscovered musical treasures from this year fascinate me because of the importance of this year when India achieved its freedom. Our inhouse encylopeadia Shree Arunkumar jee has informed us repeatedly that this year held the record for maximum Hindi movies released till that time. This information is another reason why I became interested in trying to find all the available songs from movies of 1947 that are not yet represented in the blog. The music was by Dada Chandekar, who was a regular with Master Vinayak, for his Hindi and Marathi films. The cast of the film was Meenakshi Shirodkar, Vinayak, Master Vithal, Lalita Pawar, Baburao Pendharkar, Dada Salvi, Damuanna Malvankar, Vishnupant Jog etc. The cameraman was Pandurang Naik, one of the owners of Navyug, along with Baburao, PK Atre and Vinayak, of course.
