Umrao Jaan was a legendary courtesan of Lucknow, though few people outside Lucknow may be much aware of her. But all that changed in 1980 when the movie “Umrao Jaan” was released. And now, whenever one mentions Umra Jaan, one is reminded of Rekha. Just like many people think that Emperor Akbar looked like Prithviraj Kapoor, many people now think that Umrao Jaan looked like Rekha.

In 1970s, we had a genre of movies that were supposed to be fun movies, which were mainly directed by Bengali directors like Hrishikesh Mukherji, Basu Chatterji etc. These movies followed their own formula of comedy.

Bheegi bheegi fazaa

This song starts with a car moving in a road, with four people sitting in it. Good, so it is a car song, I think.
But for the rest of the song, the car remains parked. The four of them have come for a picnic. We see Shashikala, holding a picnic basket in one hand, singing this song, to no one is particular. Others have assembled there for picnic, but she seems to have gone there to sing this song. 😀 I see that her colleagues include Dharmendra, but he keeps a low profile throughout this song.

We all know that when Kishore Kumar acted in movies, he sang his own songs. Sometimes, Kishore Kumar would be dressed in drags, and even there he would provide the female playback himself ( viz. Aake seedhi lagi(Half Ticket)(1962).

There are people who think that Asha Bhonsle mostly sang light songs (cabarat etc) and she did not sing “serious” songs or song based on classical raagas. Of course that is not correct. Most songs in Hindi movies are indeed based on some Raag. The singers and music directors, whether they are trained or not follow the framework of raagas, unless it is a western song that they are composing.
