Way, way back when we were jumping with joy, on 13th November, 2011 – this blog had reached the magic number of 5000 songs. I am sure many had it in their minds to think about the 10,000th song. The year is 1957. The time in the Hindi film industry when the big name banners prominently ruled, and the success and recognition of film music was the domain of the high profile music directors. An era with a lot of stories of how Filmfare awards were influenced, and how the privileged songs were made to climb to the top of Binaca Geetmala list. In such a time and such an era, an ‘unprivileged’ song rapidly climbed the charts of popularity, completely defying the set commercial conventions, and confounding the hold of hierarchical tradition of established big names in the industry, it became the no. 1 song of 1957 at the top of Binaca Geetmala charts. The film – an unimpressive and an unremarkable socio-religious drama by the name of ‘Janam Janam Ke Phere’. The song – an unmatchable and a very endearing duet by Rafi Sb and Lata Mangeshkar – “Zaraa Saamne To Aa O Chhaliye”, an unlikely song of a human being’s search for the Almighty. The deep and impressive words of Bharat Vyas tuned to a lovely melody by a master craftsman of classical and folk genre – Shrinath Tripathi, better known as SN Tripathi.

“Pyaar Mohabbat” (1966) was produced and directed by Shankar Mukherji under the banner of Alankar Chitra. The movie had Dev Anand, Saira Banu, Premnath, Shashikala, Durga Khote, David Abraham, Asit Sen, Sulochana Latkar, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Tarun Bose, Murad, Jankidas, S. Nazir etc in it.

I was looking up the list of anniversary names on google. Well, of course, I wanted to find out what the 75th anniversary is celebrated as. Now, the fact that 25th is Silver and 50th is Gold, is well known, and well established. Beyond that, going to 75th and on to 100th, I find differing opinions. Many folks would refer to 100th as the Diamond Jubilee, with no specific preference for the 75th. Then again, there are folks who want to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee at the 75th itself going to non specific things like ‘Diamond+Pearl’ Jubilee for the 100th. I am not much convinced with this sequence. Then I found one reference where the 75th anniversary is referred to as Platinum Jubilee. Now this I would think, is a better reasoning. We keep the Diamond for the 100th, and celebrate the 75th as Platinum – more expensive than Gold, but less expensive that Diamond. Makes sense?

Welcome all to the 7400th offering on this blog, which in my opinion should now be renamed as Atul-Six-Songs-a-Day (or maybe Atul-Six-Pack 🙂 :).)
The last century milestone bade a goodbye to 2012, which turned out to be a marvelous year, as far as the accomplishments of this blog and its contributors are concerned. And then, moving on, we are now at the next century milestone, yet once again. A mite longer than regular, this century took twenty four days to arrive, far above the normal rate of one century every sixteen or eighteen days. In the interim, there were some days of travel that took time out of Atul ji’s schedule. But no matter, the interest and participation in the blog continues unabated, with unflagging enthusiasm. And that, dear friends, is the most heartening feature of this blog.

I have experienced this many times, and maybe you too could have experienced the same. The music of his songs has the quality to transport the listener to another place, another time. Just close your eyes and relax – and listen to a song like “Parbaton Ke Pedon Par Shaam Ka Baseraa Hai”(film ‘Shagoon’, 1964). The flowing waves of music will transport the listener to a vista of hills and trees with the sun slowly descending the western horizon. Or the song “Bahaaro, Mera Jeevan Bhi Sanwaaro” (film ‘Aakhri Khat’, 1966). Or the song “Apne Aap Raaton Mein Chilmanein Sarakti Hain” (film ‘Shankar Hussain’, 1976). Or the song “Simti Hui Ye Ghadiyaan” film ‘Chambal Ki Kasam’, 1979). Or the song “Aa Jaa Re Aa Jaa Re O Mere Dilbar Aa Jaa”(film ‘Noorie’, 1979). The best way to write about a poet is to write about his works, his poetry. But when we come to a poet of the stature of Rajinder Krishan, it becomes a very difficult task to write about his poetry. One simply does not know where to start. The body of work is enormous, and the number of pleasing heart stealers is so numerous, that just a sample list of favorites will go beyond a reasonable length for a write up. And no matter how representative one makes this sampler list, readers and friends will come up with wonderful gems of A grade quality that must be included.

Well one of these days, we may come to the bottom of this ocean of melody. Well yes, after all, the music that was created in the first four decades – has been created, and it is not possible to add to it anymore. And so one day we would have discovered all that is there to discover, and would have discussed it here on this blog. But as of now, there is still so much out there in front of us that thankfully, it is still going to be many years before this treasure gets exhausted. And I am sure there is enough for a lifetime. 🙂
