When one looks at Hindi movies, one realises that the dominant genres of Hindi movies keep changing with time. In the early decades of 1930, fantasy movies and mythological movies ruled the roost. From late 1940s, melancholic movies became popular.

In 1950s, crime movies, inspired from similar movies made in the west, began to be made by Hindi movie makers. Then we saw lost and found stories in 1960s, and angry young man stories in 1970s and so on.

One notices that the music in crime movies of 1950s were also inspired from west. In some cases, tunes were lifted from western tunes. Since information age was nowhere in sight those days unlike now so movie makers could get away from plagiarisation with impunity in most cases. Even otherwise, western instruments came into usage in Hindi movie magic that were used to create not only western style music but also desi style music.

Today’s song is from the comedy film ” Mr. Cartoon, M.A.-” 1958.

What a coincidence ! Last Sunday, I had selected a song from this film to be discussed today (usually I line up 3-4 songs for writing posts). However, the same song was discussed by our Sadanand Kamath ji, on Monday, 3rd March. Instead of going for another film song, I selected the only remaining song from this film for today’s post. Being the last song of the film, it will make the film YIPPEED today !

‘Senapati’ (1961) was produced by Jai Gopal Mohla under the banner Mohla Films and was directed by Kedar Kapoor. The star cast included Prithviraj Kapoor, Nalini Jaywant, Amarnath, Veena, K N Singh, Tiwari, Helen, Durga Khote, Chaman Puri, Heera Sawant, Rajan Kapoor, Janakidas, Jeevan Kala, Madhumati etc. I heard the name of the producer, J G Mohla for the first time. Before this film, he had produced ’Insaan’ (1952) and ‘Ehsaan’ (1954). After ‘Senapati’ (1961), he seems to have vanished from Hindi films. But when I saw the name of Madan Mohla as the Associate Producer of this film, it gave me a hint of some connection with J G Mohla. Madan Mohla is a familiar name because of some of his box office hit films like ‘Sharafat’ (1972), ‘Raja Jani’ (1974), ‘Dus Numbri’ (1976) etc. The online search revealed that Madan Mohla was the son of Jai Gopal Mohla (J G Mohla). Incidentally, Madan Mohla was also the assistant director under director Kedar Kapoor for this film.
