(A tribute to Composer Khayyam Saab on his birth anniversary)
————————————————————————
Today 18th February 2023 is the Ninety-sixth birth anniversary of Mohammed Zahur “Khayyam” Hashmi Saab, whom we fondly know as Khayyam Saab. Had he been alive, he would have turned ninety-six years old today.
He was born on 18.02.1927 and he passed away on 19.08.2019.
As a tribute to him today I am presenting his song composition from the movie “Mohabbaton Kaa Safar-1995”.

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Missing movies of 1973-14)
——————————————-——————————
Today we introduce the till now missing movie ‘Vishnu Puraan’ to join the movies of ‘1973’ on the blog.
“Vishnu Puraan-1973” was directed by Shridhar Prasad for ‘Shibani Pictures, Bombay’. It was produced by Bhanu Bannerjee.
“Vishnu Puraan” was a mythological movie inspired from the ‘folk tales’ and ‘legends’ of our country, and especially the ‘Katha Saritsaagar’ written by Somdev and the play ‘Swapnvasavadattam’ written by Mahakavi Bhas. This movie was about the ‘ten incarnations’ (‘dash-avtaar’) as mentioned in ‘Vishnu Puraan’, their greatness and glory.

Khalid Mohamed, the journalist, the film critic, the former editor of Filmfare magazine and The Hindustan Times, started his career in Hindi film industry when he wrote the story and screenplay for Shyam Benegal’s trilogy on Indian Muslim Women – Mehmooda Begum in ‘Mammo’ (1994), ‘Sardari Begum’ (1996) and Zubeida Begum in ‘Zubeida (2001). All these three women were the relatives of Khalid Mohamed, Zubeida Begum being his mother. After working with Shyam Benegal, Khalid Mohamed turned director with his first film, ‘Fiza’ (2000). This was followed by ‘Tehzeeb’ (2003) and ‘Silsilay’ (2005). While ‘Fiza’ (2000) was a box office hit, his next two films were box office disasters. The last film he directed was ‘Katha’ – a remake of ‘Katha’ (1983) which has remained unreleased after the completion of the film in 2016.

#Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Debutant Movie-Gumraah-1976)
——————————————————————————
In my wish-list of ‘movies with same titles’ there are still many movies that are yet to be introduced on the blog. One can definitely say that this list is surely going to be a long list.
Today we get introduced to the movie ‘Gumraah-1976’. It will be joining the better known ‘Gumraah’ of ‘1963’ on the blog.

In this article, I propose to explore two films – ‘Duvidha’ (1973) directed by Mani Kaul and ‘Paheli’ (2005) directed by Amol Palekar. Both these films are based on a short story, ‘Duvidha’ by the writer of Rajasthani literature and Sahitya Akademy Award winner, Vijaydan Detha (popularly known as ‘Bijji’). Bijji wrote the short story in 1958 by using a verbally transmitted Rajasthani folktale to convey a bride’s silent defiance of the prevailing patriarchal system by embracing a ghost as her husband when her real husband leaves for a faraway town on business for 5 years, two days after the marriage. The defiance came from the fact that her husband did not take into consideration his wife’s emotional needs while taking this decision. The author has used the metaphor of the ghost through which the wife’s silent revolt occurs.

Amol Palekar has mostly been identified with some of his ‘boy-next-door’ type of roles in Hindi films like ‘Rajnigandha’ (1974), ’Chhoti Si Baat’ (1976) ‘Chitchor’ (1976) ‘Gharonda’ (1977) ‘Golmaal’ (1979), Baaton Baaton Mein’ (1979) etc. In some of his interviews, he always claimed that he became the actor by accident, the producer by compulsion, the director by choice and artist (painter) by nature. Before debuting as an actor in Hindi films, Amol Palekar was deeply involved with experimental Marathi and Hindi theatres, both as an actor and a director. Even after his popularity as an actor had soared, he continued to get involved in the experimental theatres.

Sudhir Mishra has been known for making off-beat/parallel Hindi films. ‘Ye Wo Manzil To Nahin’ (1988) was his first off-beat film as a director. The film won the National Film Award for the best debut film of a director. Thereafter, he directed another 15 off- beat films, the last being ‘Afwaah’ (2022) which is awaiting release. Off-beat films, by their very nature, would attract only a select group of audiences. Hence, it is not likely that most of these films would qualify as box office hits. I have not heard of any of Sudhir Mishra’s films as box office success. Some of his films first got released in the international film festivals. Almost all of his films were critically acclaimed. Despite this, it was difficult to manage theatrical release for some of his films.

Hullo Atuldom
Unbelievable!!!! It is already one year. I don’t know if it is coincidence or the creator thought it was the best date to recall his beloved creation.
Basant Panchami, celebrated as Saraswathi Pooja in many parts of India, marks the preparation for the arrival of Spring. Everything everywhere is dressed in the colours of Yellow- the flowers of the mustard crop a colour associated with Mata Saraswathi. People dress in yellow dresses, make delicacies that are yellow in colour etc. Many families mark this day by sitting with babies and young children, encouraging their children to write their first words with their fingers, and some study or create music together.

(The movie – ‘Saaraansh-1984’, and tribute to Singer Bhupinder Singh)
Some movies touch you deeply, pull at your heart strings and get embedded permanently in your very being. It could be due the theme, the direction, or in the majority of the instances, the performances.
A few that have had such an effect on me are BOOT POLISH, MOTHER INDIA, SAHAB BIBI AUR GHULAM, DOST, KASTURI NIVASA (Kannada), MAUSAM, MOONRAM PIRAI (original Tamil version of Sadmaa), MASOOM, NAYAGAN, RUDAALI, BLACK.
The movie that is making its debut on the blog today is one such movie.

(A tribute to Vijay Arora)
Today we pay our tributes to Vijay Arora, a well-known actor from the seventies. His Movies and the memories related to his movies are part of our, ‘the fans of seventies’, growing years and nostalgia of the ‘seventies’.
He was the part of many movies of 1970s and he had a special place in the hearts of ‘movie watchers’ of that period.
