Kidar Sharma ‘Hasrat’, the famous lyricist, writer and filmmaker, recounts his association with Saigal Saab, while working on the film Tansen and Bhanwara. It was early 40s, and Saigal Saab was still associated with the New Theatres in Calcutta on a contract basis. Chandulal Shah of Ranjit Movietone (Bombay) planned the film Tansen, and the obvious choice for the title role was Saigal Saab. After some negotiations with New Theatres, Chandulal Shah obtained permission for having Saigal Saab work temporarily with Ranjit Movietone. The understanding was for a fixed period of time, and not for completing an assignment.

“Ham Se Badhkar Kaun” (1981) was a run of the mill kind of a movie that are produced every year and which are then soon forgotten after a few weeks.

As far as I was concerned, I actually forgot all about this movie soon after I watched it.

“Panghat” (1943) is a Prakash Pictures production. It was directed by K J Parmar and Mahesh Chandra. It had actors like Umakant, Ratnamala, Jeewan, Sushil Kumar, Raj Kumari, Shukul, Chiman Seth etc in it. There is not much information available on this movie on internet and much of the information (including what is available on imdb) is misleading and incorrect. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie.

It has happened to me quite often that I have gone to my office only to realise that the office was closed because it was a holiday. 😀 And on the other hand, there have been days when the office was open even when it was holiday for most people.

Saigal Saab, a person, a name – who went beyond being a legend in his own lifetime. He was an institution, with no parallel in the entire heritage of Hindi film music, during the years that he actually graced the stage of the world, or in all the years since. Having entered the cine world almost with the inception of talkies, as the stream of film music was still trying to find its feet, groping in the dark, he took this music to unprecedented heights, and left behind a benchmark that has not been equaled since he departed.

Most Raakhi songs in Hindi movies are sung by females playing non working sisters and they genuinely pray for the well being of their sisters. With time, even sisters in Hindi movies have become working women. And they do not just do the usual jobs meant for ladies, but they often work in jobs of masculine nature, viz in police.
