“Aar Paar” (1954) was a milestone in the history of Hindi movies. It was one of the first suspense thrillers in Hindi movies. The music of this movie broke new grounds. The music was a breathtaking combination of Indian and Western influences. The same could be said about the picturisation of the movie and its songs. It is quite obvious that the makers of this movie had drawn inspiration liberally from western movies and from western music.

Public have a se idea about the roles that the two genders play and they are used to the same roles being played by them in Hindi movies too. But sometimes movie makers come up with situations when the two genders behave in a rather unusual manner not expected of that gender and that makes amusing viewing for the public and subsequently more visits to the cinema hall for the movie makers.

Kavi Pradeep was known for wearing his heart on his sleeves and writing songs that he strongly believed in. And he had the ability to influence people with his hard hitting and straight from the heart lyrics. He has written songs iconic patriotic songs at a time when India was still ruled by the British, and he has written songs that give vent to the feelings of anguish among the public in the aftermath of partition related violence. He has written songs about the feelings of despondency and people feel when things are not going their way. And he has also written inspirational songs that tell people to look at the future with optimism, irrespective of what has happened in the past.

Baithhi hoon main nain bichhaaye

When one watches Hindi movies of the past, including their songs, and compare them with the present time, one notices that people back then had too much of time and patience. Means of instant communications were not there. People (namely the lady or parents) who will have their beloved husband/son gone to a distant place for work,will not hear from him for years, and they will patiently wait. One can not imagine people to have this kind of time and patience in today’s world.

“Pyaar ki Pyaas” (1961) is a moving story of an orphan girl who is adopted from an orphanage by a childless couple who bring her up with love an affection. But once the couple manage to have a child of their own, this girl gets neglected and she ends up in the same orphanage. In the end, the couple realise that their neglect towards the girl was unfair and they search for her. In the end,all is well that ends well.

I have noticed that majority of Hindi movie characters do not seem to do anything for their living, at least as far as songs are concerned. Most songs are about feelings of happiness, sadness, love etc. There are very few songs about the activities that help people make a living.

Om Prakash holds a special position amongst the comedy / character artists in the Hindi film world. Hailing from Jammu (born 1919), he started his acting career on stage. Then after a brief stint at the All India Radio in Lahore, he got his first major break in the movies in early 1940s, with the famous producer director DS Pancholi. He did some movies in Lahore, including Daasi, Dhamki, and Aayee Bahaar. After partition, he moved to Bombay. In a career that lasted a little over five decades, he is credited with acting in 300 plus films. Om Prakash has always held out on his own even in the presence of many leading lights of their times, having worked with the three great actors of 50s and 60s, down to working with Big B in the 1980s. And his repertoire is not limited to small, comedy roles only. He has a fair share of pivotal roles that he played in many movies during his career; in fact the success of many movies is attributed to his roles, viz. Chupke Chupke, Julie, Sharaabi, Namak Halaal, Gopi, Sadhu aur Shaitaan, Annadata, Buddha Mil Gaya etc.
