Gham ki andheri raat mein
Posted on: June 22, 2010
This song is a wonderful example of the fact that Bollywood those days possessed an embarrassment of riches in music. Besides the big name music directors, there were music directors on the fringes who were capable of creating great music as well. C Arjun was one of the lesser names from those days, who was mostly confined to working in low budget movies. But he has still given us some very memorable songs.
Here is a song composed by C Arjun that I was just not aware of. And this song comes as a pleasant surprise. This song is a superb ghazal that is sung by Rafi and Talat Mehmood. The song is written by Jaan Nissar Akhtar.
This gem of a composition is from an obscure movie called “Sushilaa” (1966). There is hardly any information avalable about this movie, but what music this movie contained ! Considering that this song came in 1966, this has to be one the last songs sung by Talat Mehmood for a movie. 1966 was a time when old order was about to change giving way to the new, and this song is very much a song of the old order.
Song-Gham ki andheri raat mein (Sushilaa) (1966) Singers-Rafi,Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Jaan Nissar Akhtar, MD-C Arjun
Lyrics
gham ki andheri raat mein
dil ko na beqaraar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein
dard hai saari zindagi
jiskaa koi silaa nahin
dil ko fareb deejiye
aur ye hauslaa nahin
aur ye hauslaa nahin
khud se to badgumaan na ho
khud pe to aitbaar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein
khud hi tadap ke rah gaye
dil ki sadaa se kyaa milaa
aag se khelte rahe
ham ko wafaa se kyaa milaa
ham ko wafaa se kyaa milaa
dil ki lagi bujhaa na de
dil ki lagi se pyaar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein
jisse na dil bahal sake
aisi khabar se faaydaa
raat abhi dhali kahaan
aabe shahar se faaydaa
aabe shahar se faaydaa
fasle bahaar aayegi
daur e khizaan guzaar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein
dil ko na beqaraar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein
Lagaa kar dil pareshaan hain

In the past, I had posted a song from a little known movie called “Nayaa Ghar” (1953). At that time I was given farmaish for two more songs of this movie. But those songs were as elusive as the movie was obscure.

After posting an untypical Madan Mohan song, here is a song that bears the hallmark of a typical Madan Mohan song. It is a ghazal, it is sung by Lata, and it is picturised on Meena Kumari !

I had never heard this song before. And I cannot be blamed either for not having heard this song before. This song is from an old and forgotten film called “Tohfaa” (1947). This film had actors like Rehman,Anuradha(?) , Mishra (?), Nawab (?),Veera (?) etc etc.

Nukta cheen hai gham e dil

I had not heard this ghazal from “Mirza Ghalib” (1954) earlier, though I had read about it. I heard it for the first time only just now. What a song it is ! The lyrics were written by Ghalib, one of the greatest shayars of Urdu literature, and the movie is of course based on his life. He was long gone by that time, but his poetry has been enlivened by the superb voice of Suraiyya and accompanied by just the right music composed by Ghulam Mohammad. Most people will never read the literary works of poets like Ghalib, but it is songs like this that will make laymen aware of the riches that a poet like Ghalib left behind for us to savour.

“Mirza Ghalib” (1954) was a movie based on the life of Mirza Ghalib, who was one of the greatest Urdu poets of all time. This meant that the makers of this movie did not have to hire a lyricist. Mirza Ghalib’s poems themselves served as the lyrics. And what superb lyrics they are too.
