Today’s song is a duet from the film ‘Aaj Aur Kal’ (1947).

This is yet another movie from 1947, about which very little information is available, other than what is given in HFGK inadequately. Names of the cast are given by only 3 names and the lyricist name is missing. The film was made Chitra productions Ltd., Lahore. It was directed by KA Abbas and the MD was Khursheed Anwar. Today’s song is from a ‘C’ grade stunt film Al Hilal aka The judgement of Allah- 1958.

Those readers who keep a track of old films may remember that way back in 1935, Sagar Movietone had produced a film of the same name Al Hilal. It was the first film of Mehboob Khan as a Director and the film had Kumar and Sitara Devi as the lead pair. That film was quite successful and even Baburao Patel of Film India magazine had praised not only the film but also hailed Mehboob Khan as a Diamond for Future.

Today 16th August 2022 is the sixty-eighth birthday of yesteryears’ singer Hemlata. She was born on 16th August, 1954.

I had earlier presented a detailed write-up about Hemlata and her songs those I cherished and the songs those have been permanently embedded in my memory since childhood and in the later growing years of my life journey thereafter. Readers can read this post. I am not going to repeat what I had said in my earlier post.

Today on the occasion of birth anniversary of Hemlata I am presenting a song sung by her from a lesser-known or may be rather an obscure movie ‘Jhoom Uthha Aakaash’ (1973).

75 years. A passage of history that belongs to us. And we belong to it. Most of us have our conscious memories completely inside of this phase. There are those who have seen the phase prior to this. And may God Almighty give them, and all of us, good health and long years, to share and to love.

Greetings to all the readers of the Blog on the occasion of आजादी का अमृत महोत्सव on the 75th Year of Independence of India today, August 15, 2022. Independence Day is the reminder to all of us about the sacrifices a large number of Indians made during the freedom struggle to achieve independence on August 15, 1947. Thanks to the history books, the present generation is aware of the sacrifices for the independence struggle, made by Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Lala Lajpat Rai, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad and many more. But lets us not forget to remember hundreds of other freedom fighters whose sacrifices, by and large, remained in anonymity. One such name which I came to know recently was that of Vidyadhari Bai, a tawaif (courtesan) who, apart from composing and singing patriotic songs in her musical performances, she also provided financial and logistic support to freedom fighters.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Road No. 303’ (1960).

This film was special in many respects. Let’s start with it’s title. Among the total of 3240 Talkie films made in the first 30 years of Hindi films (1931-1960), only 19 Hindi films had titles which actually had numbers in their Titles. The first one to have a numerical figure in its title was Miss 1933 (1933) and the last one to have it was today’s film Road No. 303 (1960). Just for information of our readers, there were 7 such film titles in the 1930’s (total films 924), only 4 such film titles in the 1940’s (total films 1191) and 8 such film titles in the 1950’s (total films 1125). There were hundreds of film titles having figures in words, like ‘Ek Thi Ladki’, ‘Do Gunde’, ‘Teen Batti Char Rasta’ etc. but numbers in titles were a novelty.

Today’s song is a comedy song from the film ‘Madmast’ (1953).

The film was made by Sweet Pictures. Produced and directed by Jagdish Pant, the film had music by V Balsara. Jagdish Pant seems to be a director by hobby, because he directed only one more film i.e. ‘Padosi’ (1971), which was also produced by himself. The cast of the film ‘Madmast’ (1953) was Nirupa Roy, Shashikala, Sapru, Nazir, Ansari, Shakeela and others. 7 songs were written by Madhuraj aka Madhukar Rajasthani, 2 by Manav, 1 by the director Jagdish Pant himself and one chorus song is left without name credit.
