#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Special Voices of the 1970s – 1 # Shailendra Singh #
———————————————–———————————-
We have already begun yet another new year full of music and nostalgia on this blog. As we leave the past year behind us, it must have added some memories and moments to cherish for every one of us and in turn adding more memorable moments to our existing ‘nostalgia bank’.
Some may have got opportunities to travel, (I wish one should travel a lot) and meet peoples from different walks of life, enjoy the diversity of our own culture by visiting parts of the country hitherto not visited and enjoy the variety of cuisines across our great country (or may be abroad, if one gets a chance) and leave behind and gather some unforgettable memories and learnings too 🙂
Aadmi musaafir hai aata jaata hai
And that is how days and years pass by and we continue with the journey of our life still missing those beautiful days but enjoying relishing the memories (Beete Huye Lamhon Ki Kasak Saath To Hogi) and the times, which after a gap of some years become more and more nostalgic for us. And ‘nostalgia’ is yet another, or stronger, reason (for me it is) that we enjoy music, movies, and the memories associated and connected with them.

Wish that we could, but we are powerless. We can’t make them stay, ones who have to go away. Jaidev, the master of enchanting melodic creations. His film songs may number just about two hundred. But the impact he left behind him, is incomparable.
Remembering Jaidev on the 30th anniversary of his passing away (6th January, 1987).
Words like ‘tragic’, ‘unsung’, ‘unlucky’, ‘jinxed’ swim through the mind when one considers the life and career of this eminent music director. The only MD in the industry to have bagged three national awards for music direction. And all his life he lived in a one room flat near Churchgate in Bombay – a residence provided by an beneficent music lover. And when that benefactor passed away, his familial survivors reclaimed even that humble dwelling.

Hullo to all in Atuldom
Wishing A.R. Rahman a very Happy Birthday!!! He turns 51 today. This music director started his life at a young age of 11 when he played in the orchestra of composers of the stature of Illyaraja, M. S. Viswanathan, M.K. Arjunan (of the Malayalam industry) etc. He has accompanied Zakir Hussain (Hindustani music), Kunnaikudi Vaidyanathan (Carnatic music) etc. on world tours. He is a trained Key- board player along with mastering the piano, synthesizer, harmonium and guitar but is a self-confessed fan of the synthesizer as he feels it is an ideal combination of music and technology. He is known to combine western classical music and carnatic music with folk, reggae, jazz rock etc which gives hours of listening pleasure.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
What luck, I must have missed this song in my online searches earlier when I was looking for songs of missing films from 1964. When I located this song couple of days back, I realize it has been sitting here for almost five years. What luck.

Hullo to Atuldom
Today’s song from a film called “Daal-me-kala” (that is how it was spelt in the titles, when I saw the movie yesterday) which released in 1964. It had a star cast of Kishore Kumar, Nimmi, Agha, Shammi, Abhi Bhattacharya, Bepin Gupta, Om Prakash, Mumtaz Begum, Sulochana Chatterjee, Tun Tun, Sunder, Keshto Mukherjee etc. the movie had four lyricists- Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Bharat Vyas, Santoshi (again as shown in the titles, must be P.L. Santoshi) and Majrooh Sultanpuri. The playback singers used were Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey and C. Ramchandra. Music director was C. Ramchandra. The movie was produced by Bepin Gupta and directed by Satyen Bose.

dekh hamen awaaz na dena
o bedard zamaane. . .
The saga of the filmland, the dizzying ups, and the ignominious lows; the crush of fans and lovers, and the loneliness of the nether years; the happy days of spring of success, and the cold desolate days of the winters of anonymity; the words of love and music, and the silent conversations with the past, waiting for a sound. Such is the tale of many an artist that applied their lives to this film world. The whirl of the merry go round does never stop, but comes a day that one cannot hold on – and then what remains is the nausea, the vertigo of having stepped off a speedy whirlwind.

‘Nirantar Neeraj’ – the name of a stage program that has been created by the Ibaadat group, on the life and works of this distinguished poet of this sub continent. [Ed Note: Ibaadat Foundation (www.ibaadatindia.org) is a non-profit group of lovers of poetry and film music, who conduct regular stage shows in various cities. Each of their programs is focused on an eminent poet. ‘Nirantar Neeraj’ was first staged in Delhi, in September 2014.] When I read the title of the, it enamoured me so much.
