A R Rahman – The Musician of 21st Century – 6
—————————————————————-

This is post number 06 in the series. As musicians go, ARR is a complete package. He is also much more than a musician, has proved to be media savvy as well as a successful businessperson. He is the first of Indian film music directors to own his music. Previously all film music was owned by films producers/distributors or the music companies, who released records/cassettes/discs etc. The same system prevails in the industry. Only ARR is one who is different. In this regard too ARR is a trend setter. Lata Mangeshkar could think of only royalty and here we have a 90’s kid on the block, who aimed to own the world, at least his portion of it.

hum mehnatkash iss duniya se
jab apna hissa mangenge
ik baag nahin, ek khet nahin
ham saari duniyaa maangenge

There may be others who are following the same path, I don’t know. His growth in all the above, has been exponential and blessed. Some of the singers introduced by ARR have also matured and achieved great heights in their singing career.

The song I am presenting this time is from the film ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ (2002) which surfaced in the memory while doing the earlier post of the same song from the 1963 film ‘Shaheed Bhagat Singh’ – “Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna Ab Hamaare Dil Mein Hai“.

This is the song, part of which is shot near to the Thajiwas glacier, near Sonamarg, Kashmir. This is the route going to Laddakh, travelling east of Srinagar.   Further on this road falls Kargil area, about which many people have told me is much too beautiful to miss.  Laddakh is a sight to behold too.  I have missed both Laddakh and Kargil, but hope to visit in future, in-sha-Allah.

The other day when this song from the film Takshak(1999) appeared in the blog, it invoked memories of another film song of the same actors, a similar dance song, where Tabu is dancing with a group of girls, in day light this time. The song is from the film “Vijaypath”(1994), already posted in the blogAaiye aapka intezaar thhaa.

Tribute to Lata Mangeshkar – 3

From where can one start talking of Lata Mangeshkar, from the ‘carefree’ Hawa mein udtaa jaaye, to the restless Jiya bekaraar hai, to the idealistic “ham ne dekhi hai unn aankhon ki mehekti khushoo”, to the itthlati/itraati “bindiya chamkegi’/ ’koyi shehri babu dil lehri babu’, to pensive “rahen na rahen ham’, to the patient “ab to hai tum se’ mischievous “baahon mein chale aao’, to the mysterious ‘naina barse’/“lag ja gale” , to the despairing ‘jo ham ne daastaan apni sunaayi’, to the unabashed “kaanton se kheench kar yeh aanchal” & “ab ke sajan saawan mein” & “nainon mein badra chhaye”, to the resigned “duniya mein aisa kahan sab ka naseeb hai”, to sad “duniya mein ham aayen hai to” & ‘bekas pe karam keejiye”, & “Raja ki aayegi baraat”….. the list will go on forever.

Tribute to Lata Mangeshkar – 2

Yaraa seeli seeli
birha ki raat ka jalnaa
dholaa seeli seeli
yeh bhi koyi jeenaa hai
yeh bhi koyi marnaa

O how slow is the night(lamp)
Burning to ambers, Oh love
Oh love, the slow burn
of the lonely lamp.
is this way of the living?
Or it is the way of the dead.

tooti hui choodiyon se
jodoon yeh kalaayi main ae
pichhli gali mein jaane
kya chhod aayi main
beetee huyi galiyon se ae
phir se guzarna yaraa

broken are they,
the bangles I try to adorn.
(They were whole once-my loved ones)
In the lane behind me,
What have I left behind.
(something in the previous life)
Those same lanes, call me,
I must pass by them again, love.

pairon mein na saaya koyi
sar pe na saayin re
mere saathh jaaye naa
meri parchhaayi re
baahar ujaalaa hai
andar veeraana

No one beside me, no shade (for feet).
No Lord(benevolent),
even to care for me.
No one goes with me,
not even my shadow.
All brightness is on the outside.
Inside it is all dark and desolate, my love.

In 1990, I was fascinated with this song. Not seen the song anywhere, only heard it on the radio. I don’t remember what else I knew about it, only that Dimple Kapadia was the actress, singing this on screen.

On February 06, 2022 the voice fell silent forever. Today is the first Remembrance Day of ‘Nightingale of India’. We can give her many adjective call her ‘Andaleeb-e-hindostan’ or ‘hindustan ki bulbul’. The government of India has awarded her the highest civilian award of ‘bharat ratna’.

AR Rehman – The Musician of 21st Century – 4

Agar firdaus bar-rū-e-zamīñ ast
Hamīñ ast o hamīñ ast o hamīñ ast

Dekh tera kya rang kar diya hai
Khushboo ka jhonka tere sang kar diya hai

If I say that the above lines perfectly describe the colourful sights and smells of Kashmir, then it is much less than what I want to say. The first time I travelled outside Maharashtra, north of Mumbai, was the trip to Kashmir combined with Delhi-Agra visit back in 2012. So, after 10 years I just thought, let’s do a package tour this time. There we were, 6 of us in the group, a couple from Bangalore, two senior ladies from Gujarat and my husband with his better half 😊. We two reached a day earlier then the group tour was to start, in the 3rd week of August. This was right after the engagement ceremony in Belgaum. So, we got to stay in two different houseboats and we covered Yusmarg, another beautiful part of the valley, a little off the beaten track. Apart from Srinagar, this was the only place I got to see a crowd of local people. There were some school groups, who were visiting that day. Lots of girls and boys in school uniforms with teachers.

Celebrating a wedding at Bangalore
———————————————-

The wedding of my nephew (Elder sisters son) was solemnised at Bangalore in the last week of December. The groom is born in Mumbai, but has grown up studied and now working also in Bangalore, so he is a Bangaloria, through and through. I used to call him Bangaloria when he was a kid, for the way he would speak the local dialect. The engagement had taken place at Belgaum in August. The bride’s family are very traditional and conservative. They wanted the wedding to take place within 2-3 months. November was the month, they wanted to plan. Since we had our Turkey visit already planned for November end, and my brother had only few days leave in December, somehow, a date suiting all made final.

74th Republic Day on 26th January, 2023

We have all heard this ghazal, in the form of patriotic songs, songs with nationalistic flavour in various films made on Shaheed Bhagat Singh, and some not made on him. Such is the power of this inquilabi poetry, that people seemed to have recited and memorised this one through generations, when there was no digitalization of data and published material was not available for cheap. Or not easily accessible in remote areas. The ghazal has gone hand in hand with ‘mera rang de basanti chola’ through out history of independent India, in movies and beyond. Be it hindi films or regional language films, obviously Punjabi movies. But I am prepared to not be surprised to find these two songs in other regional language films, like Bengali, Marathi and others.

My thoughts and impressions about Turkey

I had zeroed in on this song to write this travelogue post, but keeping it for its turn, as I wanted to do some other post before this. But my last post for Rafi Sahab’s birth anniversary, inspired some very interesting comments and discussions, especially from Shri. Partha Chanda Sir, who is a treasure full of knowledge. Whatever is the outcome of the Voyager I & II’s search, the quest for intelligent life in outer spaces and the milky way will continue. It is a race against time for scientists, who I think are desperate to find another habitable planet, which can sustain life. I also feel, they might even have some definite clues, for they sent two space ships in 2 years in the same direction(?).
