The song with this post is a walk down memory lane for me. I had seen this movie with my dad in the movie hall and subsequently he had purchased the cassette of its songs too. The songs from this album along with those of “Yaraana”, “Qurbaani” and “Sholay” used to be played constantly on holidays and I had learnt all the songs from these ‘by heart’ prompting the elders in the family to comment that if I had shown similar passion in studies I would have been a topper, not that I was a bad student but I used to top only in mathematics and was reasonably good at all other extra or co-curricular activities.

Happy Children’s Day to Atuldom
“Makdee” means spider. This was also the title of a movie in 2002 which was directed by Vishal Bharadwaj who was also the music director. This was one of the movies in recent times that portrayed children the way they actually should be – as bright, intelligent, naughty and playful. I am put-off when children are portrayed as miniature adults and made to mouth huge sentimental dialogues which I am 100% sure kids from normal upbringing would not even dream of. My definition of kids from a normal upbringing is where the only thing that a child has to do is finish their school, come home -play in the ground or backyard, do their studies for the next day, help around the family as per necessity, play mischief and be active through the day so that they sleep peacefully and wake up fresh to have their routines all over again. In between all this they should have time to read comics, novels, have memorable time with their grandparents and friends which will stay with them for their life as pleasant memories. ‘Makdee’ was one such movie.

B. R. Chopra’s romantic comedy “Pati Patni Aur Woh”, based on the “seven-year itch” of Hollywood starring Marilyn Monroe made its blog debut on 25th February 2009 with the most famous song of the movie thhande thhande paani se nahaana chaahiye. After three years na aaj thha na kal thha was posted on the occasion of Kishore Kumar’s Birthdate. After almost a full year Sudhirji gave us this article on a song which can be called as a “movie inside a movie” song.

Let us all wish the Baadshah of Bollywood on his 54th birthday.
Wish this was an audio post, then I would have started my post with what we used to hear on the radio Ads in the 70s and 80s. I would have first played a line “aashiq hoon main qaatil bhi hoon” then after the voice over by a Vijay Behl or Ameen Sayani or a Vinod Sharma or it could be Harish Bhimani (I don’t remember the names of all the announcers, sorry) the Radio Ad would have closed with the repeat of the last line of the mukhda of the song – “Baadshah o baadshah, baadshah hey baadshah, baadshah”.

It is the birthday of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. This gorgeous Miss World 1994 is also a Padma award winner along with awards for Best Actress (Ham Dil De Chuke Sanam) and Best Actress in a supporting role as Parvati (Devdas).

Let me wish a very Happy Deepawali to one and all. Let the festival light up our lives with lots of positivity love and peace. Let the new Samvat bring in prosperity all around. In all this let us try and make the life of everyone around us happy too. Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi and Laxmi Pooja starts the festive week which goes on to Bhai Dooj and ends with Chat Pooja. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s highest award in cinema. It is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organisation set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The recipient is honoured for their “outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema” and is selected by a committee consisting of eminent personalities from the Indian film industry. The award comprises a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of Rs 1,000,000 (US$14,000). Presented first in 1969, the award was introduced by the Government of India to commemorate Dadasaheb Phalke’s contribution to Indian cinema. Phalke (1870–1944), who is popularly known as and often regarded as “the father of Indian cinema”, was an Indian filmmaker who directed India’s first full-length feature film, Raja Harishchandra.

The 80s was a period when there were a whole set of “Made in South” movies. Movies essentially remakes of popular and successful Telugu, Tamil and Kannada movies. Movies with nearly same formula- one hero and two heroines, both ladies loving the hero equally with the hero behaving courteously with one and loving the other passionately. To add further twist, the heroines will be sisters (as in Tohfa), childhood best friends (as in Raaste Pyar Ke), or meet accidentally and become good friends (as in Maang Bharo Sajna and Asha Jyoti).
