So today is the 81st birthday of our favourite “he-man” (a tag like the angry-young-man tag that was given to Amitabh Bachchan a long time ago.)
Born in Punjab and loved the world over he is an actor first who went on to become a producer to launch his sons in filmdom. He was possibly the only actor to have sailed successfully through the Rajesh Khanna and then the Amitabh Bachchan wave. He had a hold on comedy too -“Chupke Chupke” is a case in point. So today we are celebrating Dharamendra.

Kishore Kumar – his many moods …
————————————–
In my current search for missing Kishore Kumar songs on the blog, this song fits the bill perfectly. This is a song from his earlier decades i.e. before the seventies, here Kishore Kumar is singing for himself and this is the only Kishore Kumar song from ‘Asha – 1957’ that is yet to be discussed in the blog. In addition, this song also had the added qualification of being one of the ‘lesser heard’ songs too. Personally I do not recall any occasions of listening to this song in the past.

I have no idea when it was for the first time that I heard this song under discussion. I may have listened to it for the first time on radio many years ago.
I have never watched this movie ‘Jaane Anjaane-1971’. The song that I associate this movie with is not this title song, but other better known songs viz. ‘teri neeli aankhon ke’ and later ‘chham chham baaje re payaliya’. I became familiar with these songs when when I got a compilation of songs recorded in 1987-98 that I labelled as ‘classical songs from Hindi movies’.

Hullo everyone
Here is a typical Kishore Kumar song. Combining with RD Burman he gives us a bhajan, qawwali and Hindustani classical all at one shot. Such a song has entertainment value and Kishore Kumar doesn’t disappoint (has he ever?) And there are very few Bollywood actors who can carry it off with equal gusto.
Here we have our very own Sanjeev Kumar giving a paisa vasool performance.

Today, the 30th of October 2016, is the death anniversary of Vinod Mehra, yesteryear actor.
When Vinod Mehra died in 1990 of a heart attack, at the young age of 45, it came as a shock to many, including myself. He had been a familiar figure in films for the previous two decades, with reasonable success. And at 45, still had plenty to look forward to in his career and life.

Today 15th October 2016 is the 94th birth anniversary of Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi. We know him as Shankar of the music director team Shankar- Jaikishan of the 50s and 60s. Shankar Singh s/o Ram Singh (15 October 1922 – 26 April 1987) was a native of Telangana (formerly Andhra Pradesh and at the time of Shankar’s birth probably Nizam territory) and spent his early years in Hyderabad. During his formative years, Shankar played the tabla and learned the art formally from Baba Nasir Khan Sahib. For many years, Shankar studied as a disciple of the legendary composer Khwaja Khurshid Anwar, in whose orchestra he performed. Shankar started his career with a theater group, before shifting to Prithvi Theatre where he played tabla and performed some minor roles in plays. Shankar worked as assistant to the leading composer duo of Husnlal Bhagatram.

One thing about life that amazes me is its unpredictability. Let me explain. See when I got the email from Sudhirji in April 2014 informing me about the approaching 10K milestone I had decided to send as many songs as possible to Atul for reaching 10000 as soon as possible. And in right earnest I sent 4 songs over a week in my (personal) “March unto 10000” mission. And I must say Atul was good to me by posting all of them instantly. Then came my unexpected tour of Delhi; and I took a break from my list of romantic songs and sent a Delhi based song. This is one incident that proves that we plan something and we end up doing something else.
