‘Aalor Pipasa’ (Thirst for Light) was a Bangla film released in January 1965. The film was directed by Tarun Majumdar. The film is available on-line with English sub-titles. The story of the film is about a courtesan (Sandhya Roy) who sacrifices her life for the betterment of her son. The entire story is depicted in the film by way of flash back when a senior doctor (Pahadi Sanyal) tells the story of the courtesan to his junior doctor (Asit Baran). The junior doctor happens to be the courtesan’s son.

Hullo Atuldom
The song with this post is a walk down memory lane for me. I had seen this movie with my dad in the movie hall and subsequently he had purchased the cassette of its songs too. The songs from this album along with those of “Yaraana”, “Qurbaani” and “Sholay” used to be played constantly on holidays and I had learnt all the songs from these ‘by heart’ prompting the elders in the family to comment that if I had shown similar passion in studies I would have been a topper, not that I was a bad student but I used to top only in mathematics and was reasonably good at all other extra or co-curricular activities.

Today (18 november 2019) is thr 118th birth anniversary of V Shantaram (18 november 1901- 30 october 1990).
When one looks at the career of V Shantaram, one can only be amazed. He made his debut as an actor in 1921 in a silent movie “Surekha Haran”(1921). His last movie was as a director in “Jhanjhaar”(1987).

Today’s song is a lovely duet by Lata and Hemant Kumar, from film Daaka-59. The film was made by Starland productions, Bombay for Hasmukh Kheda. The film was directed by Nanubhai Bhatt and the 6 songs of the film were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri (2 songs) and by Prem Dhawan (4 songs). Their music was composed by the King of Melody – Chitragupta. Dilip Dholakia was his assistant for this movie.
