Nirantar Neeraj’ – the name of a stage program that has been created by the Ibaadat group, on the life and works of this distinguished poet of this sub continent. [Ed Note: Ibaadat Foundation (www.ibaadatindia.org) is a non-profit group of lovers of poetry and film music, who conduct regular stage shows in various cities. Each of their programs is focused on an eminent poet. ‘Nirantar Neeraj’ was first staged in Delhi, in September 2014.] When I read the title of the, it enamoured me so much. A feeling of profundity follows the sound of this title.

Gopaldas Saxena ‘Neeraj’, turns 92 today. We all wish for him continued – ‘nirantar’ – time of good health, comfort and above all, creative passions.

Missing Films of 1960s – 37
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Aah so, new year resolutions – just like carrying heavy burdens. It is only so far that one can haul them. Some can lug them short distances, some can lug them for longer distances. And only rarely can one continue to bear a resolution, on and on.

Atul ji’s tenacity is a legend by now. Maybe not all resolves, but at least he has been able to maintain the ‘no-dot-days’ resolution for, now let us see – the last dot-day on record is 7th September, 2016. Wow – we now have a string of 484 days of continued posting, which translates to 1 year, 3 months 28 days. This blog has been updated with at least one new song every day, without a break – for the past 1 year, 3 months and 28 days continuously (the calculation includes the two end dates of this time period). There have been other breaks in earlier months of 2016 itself. There may or may not be a longer unbroken string of days prior to 2016, but that has to be checked in detail. I have not yet completely researched all the periods, prior to this duration.

Lata’s Songs NOT YET covered on our Blog – 21
———————————————–

The last post I had posted on our wonderful musical blog was on 11th October 2017 !! After such a looooooooong gap, I am encouraged by what Sadanand Bhai has started and being one of the contributors (though a minor one) I am trying to post one song in this new year in my series ‘Lata’s Songs NOT YET covered on our Blog’.

This reminds me of a funny proverb in Gujarati, ‘Mai Bhi Dich’. In olden days there were community dinners for various castes and there was a dinner hosted for Brahmins. All will sit on cleaned ground in rows and the host will come to each with salt in the hand and ask for the sub-caste of Brahmins. The town had maximum Audichya Brahmins, so the major response from the row will be ‘AauDICH’, which sounded ‘Dich’ ‘Dich’ on the whole. One Miyabhai was tempted to taste the wonderful smelling food, also set down in the row. When the host came to him he said ‘Ma Bhi Dich’ and exposed himself that he was not a Brahmin. (ha ha ha ha )

Ardeshir Irani and his film production company, Imperial Movietone was associated with India’s first talkie film ‘Alam Ara’ (1931). In the same year, he was also associated with the first Tamil talkie film ‘Kalidas’ (1931) as a producer. Ardeshir Irani had another ‘first’ to his credit. He produced ‘Kisaan Kanya’ (1937) which was the first indigenously processed full colour film in India using Cinecolour process. Ardeshir Irani acquired the processing rights from an American Company. The film was processed in India with Imperial Movietone’s technicians under the supervision of a foreigner, WM Henius.

Today’s song is from film ‘Sautela Bhai’ (1962). This film was about the divine quality of brotherly love between step-brothers, like Ram-Laxman or Ram-Bharat. The film had its quota of all possible tear jerking emotions and the artful close relatives who would enjoy the sorrow and misery of the otherwise united family. Actually, this was a most suitable story for a south Indian film, like AVM, who specialised in such movies.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 2

‘आ’ – आ तुझको बुलाएँ ये प्यासी निगाहें

जाने वाले फिर नहीं आते
जाने वाले की याद आती है

The dear ones who depart this world, do never return; just the memories remain. And then, just as another poet has said, “यादों का सहारा ना होता, हम छोड़ के दुनिया चल देते”. If we did not have the bracing support of the memories, life would really have been a difficult journey to tread. Memories make us experience the past emotions once again, and in a manner, give us the strength to permeate the emotions of sorrow that may linger after the departure of a loved one.

Today’s song is from a comparatively new film ‘Lagaan’ (2001). The song, written by Javed Akhtar and composed by AR Rahman, is sung by 5 singers, viz. Alka Yagnik, Shaan, Shankar Mahadevan, Sukhwinder Singh and Udit Narayan. Why do I feel some readers are smiling after reading my above sentence calling ‘Lagaan’ as a new film ? As compared to what my forte has been so far (old films from 1930s to 1970), ‘Lagaan’ IS a comparatively new film. . . at least for me !

‘अ’ – अब जीने का मौसम आया

kya kahoon
kuchh kahaa nahin jaaye. . .

Really so – our utterances and our thoughts well nigh come to a helpless pause. The more I want to substantiate these thoughts, the more difficult I find to avoid repeating myself. And yet, the voice of Rafi Sb, the limitless nuances of emotions it carries, the multitude of expressions carried in thousands of songs – that voice, that divinity descended from the heavens, continues to perpetuate afresh, with every song that is played. There seems no end to this variety.

Today is a very special day for all HFM lovers. It is the birth anniversary of one of the most beloved of artistes, and one of the greatest and most respected. I am, of course, talking about the one and only Rafi Saab.

Had he been alive today, he would have completed 93 years. But as fate would have it, he left us in 1980 itself, when he was barely 55. One does not have control over these matters – one can only have fond memories of the person concerned, and enjoy the rich legacy that he or she has left behind.

And WHAT A LEGACY Rafisaab has left behind!
