It was 1958. A singing contest was organized in Bombay, sponsored by Murphy radios. The judges of the contest were the ‘दिग्गज‘ music directors of that era – Naushad, Anil Biswas, C Ramchandra, Vasant Desai and Madan Mohan. With a battery of such illustrious composers sitting in the jury, just be able to participate and perform in their presence, would have been a privilege. And for sure, the best talented aspirants had applied to be part of this contest. The singer that this impressive selection panel honored to be the best singer was a young man, originally from Amritsar, but settled in Bombay since childhood. The interesting thing about this young man was that he had been earlier rejected in auditions by All India Radio and Young India Ltd. (the gramophone records company). Along with being honored as the winner the verdict of this panel, Mahendra Kapoor got an opportunity immediately to sing for some of the music directors on the judge’s panel.

Prem naam hai mera. . .
Prem Chopra. . .
Thus happens the surprise introduction of this villain cum character artist, in the film ‘Bobby’ (1973). I call it a surprise because his name does not appear in the credits at the start of the film. ‘Bobby’ was one of the films that I got to see on the big screen, with family. Prem Chopra would be a familiar artist in the nascent mind of the school going ‘yours truly’, thanks to films like ‘Shaheed’ and ‘Upkar’. And so, when abruptly and unexpectedly on to the shining tinsel screen, appears this familiar face and the familiar voice, chewing on a blade of grass, and making his presence felt in a very lewd and unexpected manner, I remember I was aghast – “arre, is ka to naam bhi nahin hai, ye kaise aa gaya?”. For a split second, the thought did cross my mind – “cinema waalon ne koi galat reel laga di hai”. But immediately as the film continued, that thought would be discarded. “Achhaa, aisa bhi hota hai. B’gair naam ke bhi actor film mein aa jaate hain”.

“Naag Mandir” (1966) was directed by Shantilal Soni for Mayur Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Mahipal, Vijaya Chaudhary, Indira Bansal, B M Vyas etc in it.

And why not? Having ‘chaat pakodi’ and ‘bhel puri’ occasionally is a good break from the routine meals at home, day in and day out. And so it is with the ‘jhagda’. Isn’t that a matter of common everyday experience? A lot of love, spiced with the pepper of arguments and squabbles; add to the value of high spirits and breaks the monotony of goody goody goodness. Wonderful site. A very useful & handy reference tool, too. I browse it regularly for my dose of golden oldies, rare gems, lyrics, song info or just to surprise myself. The days of yore studded with glittering jewels such as Radio Ceylon/SLBC & Vividh are sorely missed.
One thing that I notice & love about your blog is the painstaking indexing & categorisation of the content & the accuracy of material, esp. lyrics. Generally, the lyrics are free from errors, authentic and spelled brilliantly. Only a person of language can do such justice to transliterating hindi into english with admirable precision & exactness.
I’m sure you devote a considerable amount of time to build up and maintain this blog.
