These days I have become interested in statistics regarding Rafi Lata duets. I have mentioned that Rafi and Lata figured in some 410 plus duets. Their very first duet was recorded in 1947 and it was for a movie called “Shaadi Se Pehle” (1947). It was followed by a one year hiatus and then they recorded as many as 17 duets in 1949.

“Aar Paar” (1954) was clearly a milestone in the annals of Hindi movies. The songs of this movie were quite different from the kinds of songs that the music lovers were used to. And all the songs of the movie became popular and remain popular to this day. In fact there are so many popular songs in this movie that it is easy to lose count of them.

These days I have begun to look at Rafi-Lata duets with renewed interest. My interest has been aroused after I learnt some interesting statistics about the number of duets the two have sung together. It is estimated that the duo have sung about 410 odd duets. It excludes those songs in which some other voices were also present. And it also excludes multiple version songs (viz. same song sung separately by the two).

“Amar” (1954) is a movie starring Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. Those were the days when the two of them were actually romantically involved and their off screen chemistry used to be visible in their on screen performances too.

“Saawan Ki Ghataa” (1966) was a movie directed by Shakti Samant. I find that the screenplay of this movie was written by Gulshan Nanda, the leading Hindi novelist of those days. So it leads me to think that this movie could well be based on a novel by Gulshan Nanda. Incedentally, movies like “Kati Patang”, Jheel Ke Us paar” etc are some of the movies based on Gulshan Nanda’s novels.

Shammi Kapoor discovered his calling as the actor we all know and admire in 1957 with “Tumsa Nahin Dekha”. It was followed by “Dil Deke Dekho” (1959) and the phenomenon of Shammi Kapoor was well on its way.

“Shaadi Se Pehle” (1947) was a movie produced by Raja Nene Productions, Bombay and it had actors like Ranjna,Rajan,Vasant Thengri,Raja Nene, Leela Gadkar,Gokhale,Dixit,Bargir,Jivaji Kulkarni etc in it. This movie was also known by an alternative title viz “Juye Ka Nateeza” (meaning Evils of gambling)
