In my last article, I had discussed Basu Chatterjee’s film, ‘Gudgudee’ (1997) which was inspired from a Hollywood film, ‘The Seven Year Itch’ (1955). In this article, I have taken up for discussion yet another film of Basu Chatterjee which was inspired from a Hollywood film, ‘The Fortune Cookie’ (1966). The film is ‘Laakhon Ki Baat’ (1984). The film was produced and directed by Basu Chatterjee. The star cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Farooq Shaikh, Anita Raj, Anjali Sen, Utpal Dutt, Pinchoo Kapoor, Dinesh Hingoo, Subbiraj, Javed Khan, Bhagwan Sinha etc. Neither the name of the storywriter nor the acknowledgement of the inspiration for the film was mentioned in the credit titles of film.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Lakeeren’ (1954).

The film was produced and directed by Harbans. Despite my efforts, I was unable to collect any information about this director. All that I could gather from online sources was that Harbans directed in all 17 films, from 1943 (‘Mr. Jhatpat’) to 1971 (‘Sher e Watan’), acted in 3 films (‘Khoj’ (1953), ‘Bade Sarkar’ (1957) and ‘Bahadur Daaku’ (1966) and wrote 1 song for film ‘Jungle Ka Sher’ (1946).

Hullo Atuldom

We are all fans of someone or other. We also find that our idols are fans of talents from their growing up years, whom they used to idolize & continue to do so. I can enumerate many examples to show this- {1} Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Shahrukh Khan etc have a huge fan following but, at various occasions they have confessed that seeing Dilip Kumar on-screen is what made them want to be become actors. {2} Dilip Kumar & Dev Anand are said to have been inspired by Ashok Kumar. {4} Waheeda Rehman’s is another case in point – her fangirl moment came when she got to face the camera alongside Dev Anand for ‘C.I.D’ (1956).

The life lived in this finite world with infinite possibilities is nothing if not the memories collected in the heart and mind. The audio-visual medium, overdose or not, is the ultimate. Some of those lasting memorable visuals are of the silver screen and black & white television screen. I may forget some of the names of those characters and actors, but the emotions conveyed and invoked in those scenes stay with me and have survived the test of time.

I have had the link and lyrics of this song saved in my files for some months now.  The month of July 2023 was a month of heavy rains and floods in many parts of India.  We had incessant rains in Mumbai also, where it was raining day and night, with a few breathers in between.

Mukesh and his Composers – 28A
——————————————–

As we continue our journey of posting obscure gems of Mukesh which are relatively less heard, we come across many interesting and sometimes unfortunate stories in the making of some the films. Sudhir ji sought to know, if I would be interested in posting a song from the film Society (early 70s, 1987, 2019). I said, I am aware that the song from this film is available, but I would take it up sometime later. However, he said that it must be part of the celebration of Mukesh’s birth centenary. It was an offer I could not refuse or postpone and hence this post.

Today’s song is a famous Ghazal by Mirza Ghalib, from the film Qaidi-1940.

Film Qaidi-1940 was a Landmark movie. It was a Muslim social film. It was not the first film depicting the muslim culture in a hindi film, still it occupies a special place in this Genre for many reasons. Muslims have been a major and the biggest Minority in India for many centuries. Muslim kings who came from outside India ruled this country for many years too. Therefore it was but natural that films depicting Muslim culture were made in India from the early era onwards after Talkie films started.
