“Johar in Bombay” (1967) was directed by Shantilal Soni for Thakkar Films, Bombay. The movie had I S Johar, Sonia Sahni, K N Singh, Rajendranath, Madan Puri, Polson, Jeevankala etc in it.

This movie was one of several “Johar in…” series on movies, a bit like the “Carry on…” series of movies in Hollywood.

Today is 3 january 2018 and we are into the early days of 2018. This is that time of the year when most people feel extremely resolutionary (not to be confused with revolutionary). One regular of our blog commented in our whatsapp group that it is not safe to go on morning walk in these early days of the year as the streets would be full of this highly resolutionary early morning walkers. It is however expected that things would be back to normal after the first week. 🙂

Unlike many who keep away till midnight on new year eve, I went to bed early and when I woke up on first january 2018, it was 5:45. It was late by my standards, but I realised that there was no electricity. The state Electricity Board was letting people in my locality down for the second morning in a week. Previous morning was a sunday, but this first day of the year was a working day.

hullo Atuldom

So, it is the new year. I have not made any resolutions, as usual, just taking life as it chooses to unfold itself. Anyway, it has always been my way of living. People who are connected with me on WhatsApp must have seen my status message- “Kal kya hoga kis ko pata” I also subscribe to the thought “abhi zindagi ka le lo mazaa”. (this is from a song by Gulshan Bawra)
My todays post is a song from the 1994 release “Aag” starring Govinda, Shilpa Shetty, Sonali Bendre (in a special appearance) with Kader Khan, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Shakti Kapoor, Goga Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Suresh Chatwal etc. etc. in the supporting cast. This movie was directed by K. Ravi Shankar and released in August 1994. This was a change of image for Govinda in the sense that it had him play a serious character.

Today’s song is from film ‘Sautela Bhai’ (1962). This film was about the divine quality of brotherly love between step-brothers, like Ram-Laxman or Ram-Bharat. The film had its quota of all possible tear jerking emotions and the artful close relatives who would enjoy the sorrow and misery of the otherwise united family. Actually, this was a most suitable story for a south Indian film, like AVM, who specialised in such movies.

Today’s song is from a comparatively new film ‘Lagaan’ (2001). The song, written by Javed Akhtar and composed by AR Rahman, is sung by 5 singers, viz. Alka Yagnik, Shaan, Shankar Mahadevan, Sukhwinder Singh and Udit Narayan. Why do I feel some readers are smiling after reading my above sentence calling ‘Lagaan’ as a new film ? As compared to what my forte has been so far (old films from 1930s to 1970), ‘Lagaan’ IS a comparatively new film. . . at least for me !

Hullo to Atuldom

We have had two posts today celebrating the birth anniversary of the one and only Mohd. Rafi. And both were excellent posts. Our Avinashji has managed to remember Mahipal’s birth anniversary too. Great job!

“Asli Naqli” that was released in 1986 was directed by Sudarshan Nag. It had a star cast of Shatrughan Sinha- Anita Raaj- Raadhika- Rajnikanth- Amrish Puri- Shakti Kapoor -Ashok Kumar. It had a normal storyline wherein as boy is separated from his wealthy parents in childhood. His parents have only one clue of him- a locket that he is wearing. Upon his father’s death the mother embarks on a mission to trace out her long-lost son with the help of (typically named) Durjan Singh (Amrish Puri). Durjan Singh and his son Shakti Singh (Shakti Kapoor) plant Birju ustaad (Rajnikanth) as the son with the sole motive of plundering the wealthy widow. Then Shatrughan Sinha steps-in and the plot spices up. Further the ladies are there for the song and dance routines. Essentially what this movie had was two superstars with stylised acting and the public had a paisa-vasool feeling. It had a decent run at the box-office.

The small girl in the song with this post celebrates her 52nd birthday today—unbelievable she is so young. The birthday list on our blog says she is 1965 born, also the Filmfare awards list page says she was all of 15 when in 1980 she won the Best Supporting Actress award for her depiction of a rape victim (in ‘Insaaf Ka Taraazu’). She seems to have been around forever. I just do not want to use the phrase ‘past her prime.’ Come to think of it she is younger to the Khans who are ruling the industry these days.

Today, 25th of October 2017, is the thirty seventh ‘remembrance anniversary’ of the great ‘poet-lyricist’ Sahir Ludhianvi. He passed away this day in 1980 leaving behind the great legacy of his poems and leaving behind his immortal poetry which people are still enjoying, discussing, and even doing research on it and writing about his life and his poetry. And like me there will be many who will agree that Sahir and his poetry will be discussed as long as Hindi Cinema and HFM exists and his poetry will be discussed so long as humanity and human relations, emotions exists.

The song under discussion today is from film ‘Sharada’, one of the hit films of 1957. What a year 1957 was ! In the Golden Era of the Hindi Film Music, the year 1957 would go down as the best year, which provided everlasting songs from musical films. The deluge of excellent songs was such that music lovers not only enjoyed the heavy downpour, but loved every piece of Music.
