It has been variously said that there is a song in Hindi movies for practically any occasion, any situation, any profession, in short, there is a song for probably just anything. One just has to look for it long enough. The list of categories of songs on this blog itself is evidence that there are absolutely zany and unthinkable situations for which there are songs in Hindi movies. So, is there a song for cleaning dishes? I am sure there are more than one song in domestic or business situations wherein dishes are being cleaned with music and singing. How about cleaning dishes and utensils to classical music? :D)

The movie Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) is one of the classic movies of the great producer director Guru Dutt. This is a remarkable watershed movie, about the business of making movies. Guru Dutt plays the role of a director in the film world. The storyline is a very poignant and touching portrayal of his life as he passes through the phases of success and failure, both in the personal and professional domains. In many ways, this movie is an autobiographical essay by Guru Dutt about his own life and its tribulations, down to his supposed attraction for Waheeda Rehman, and how it disturbed his personal family life with Geeta Dutt.

Earlier decades of Indian independence (1950s and 1960s) saw much enthusiasm for nation building in public life as well as in movies. And Soviet Union style socialism was considered the way to progress. Many movies were made on the theme of nation building in those days. and these movies naturally had songs to inspire people.

When I meet people and I tell them that I have a blog of old songs, I get some well meaning advices, suggestions etc. One of these well meaning suggestions is that I need not re invent the wheel as far as writing down the lyrics of the song is concerned. “Sanam” (1951) is a movie starring Dev Anand, Suraiyya,Meena Kumari,K N Singh,Gope,Pratima Devi,Jillo etc in it. This movie has some nice and interesting songs in it.I have already discussed as many as four songs from this movie.
