It was a light hearted movie (routinely categorirised as “social” movie in HFGK) which had Ashok Kumar, Rehana Sultan, Nikhilesh, Deven Verma, Keshto Mukherji, Subroto, Ashoo, Pinchoo Kapoor, Leela Mishra, Paul Sharma, Jal Parvez, Helen etc with lots of “new discoveries” viz Saajan, Kailash Sharma, Sameena, Master Ashwin and Master Ramesh, who quickly reverted back to remain undiscovered.

Yesterday (27 march 2018) was World Theatre Day. I learnt about this in the morning yesterday, as I was listening to the Vividh Bharati. Apparently, this was initiated in the year 1961, by The International Theatre Institute. It is celebrated annually on 27thMarch.

The yippeee film for today the 1972 production by Manoj Kumar – ‘Shor’.
There was a period in the career of Manoj Kumar, where every film he touched has either been a hit, or it has commanded a cult status over the years. Starting with ‘Shaheed’ in 1965, and right up to ‘Kranti’ in 1981, he produced, directed and acted in a string of hit films, that have become memorable icons over the years. It was ‘Shaheed’ in 1965, then ‘Upkar’ in 1967, then ‘Poorab Aur Pashchim’ and ‘Yaadgar’ in 1970, then ‘Shor’ in 1972, ‘Roti Kapda Aur Makan’ in 1974, and then ‘Kranti’ in 1981. Of these, the 1972 production of ‘Shor’ is kind of the odd one out – it is not really a patriotic / nationalist theme, that is Manoj Kumar’s forte, that earned him the nickname of Mr Bhaarat. After 1981, Manoj Kumar seemed to have lost his touch, and after a string of indifferent productions – ‘Painter Babu’ (1983), ‘Kalyug Aur Ramayan’ (1987), and ‘Clerk’ (1989), he kind of let go the production / direction stance.

In a film that boasts of more than one song that competes for the title of the best song in the film, this song surely is one of the best songs in this film. Wow – that sure is saying something for the quality of songs of this film. In 1962, music director Ravi has been active as an independent music director for about seven years now, and he already has about 30 films behind him, that he has composed for. His films include such notable hits as ‘Ek Saal’ (1957), ‘Dilli Ka Thug’ (1958), ‘Ghar Sansaar’ (1958), ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chaand’ (1960), ‘Ghunghat’ (1960), ‘Gharaana’ (1961), ‘Modern Girl’ (1961), ‘Bombay Ka Chor’ (1962) and many more. And then in 1962, out comes this Shammi Kapoor, Shakila, Helen starrer called ‘China Town’ – and the popular response is “Baar Baar Dekho, Hazaar Baar Dekho”. Oh yes, the songs of this film – one just does not feel done with them, no matter how many times you have heard them.

Wishing A.R. Rahman a very Happy Birthday!!! He turns 51 today. This music director started his life at a young age of 11 when he played in the orchestra of composers of the stature of Illyaraja, M. S. Viswanathan, M.K. Arjunan (of the Malayalam industry) etc. He has accompanied Zakir Hussain (Hindustani music), Kunnaikudi Vaidyanathan (Carnatic music) etc. on world tours. He is a trained Key- board player along with mastering the piano, synthesizer, harmonium and guitar but is a self-confessed fan of the synthesizer as he feels it is an ideal combination of music and technology. He is known to combine western classical music and carnatic music with folk, reggae, jazz rock etc which gives hours of listening pleasure.
