“Kaneez”(1949) is a movie that is by now largely forgotten. This movie had Shyam,Munawwar Sultana,Kuldip Kaur,Khwaja Sabir,Sinha etc in it.

“Chaar Din” (1949) is a movie starring Shyam and Suraiyya. This movie had some nice songs in it that became good candidates for being played in the “puraani filmon ke geet” on radio ceylon when I was growing up.

Thaanedaar, viz inchange of the police station (Thaanaa) is a very important person as far as public are concerned. The original term for Thaanedaar, that old generation grew up with, is “Daarogaa”. “Darogaa” was much feared ( and therefore respected) by aam jantaa. Just as members of more educated sections of society aspired to become ICS (and later IAS) officers, members of lower rung of society aspired to become Policeman and from there to Hawaldaar and then rise up to the exalted post of “daarogaa”. Other posts that carried similar awe and shock among public was “Kotwaal”. There is in fact a saying in Hindi “Sainyya bhaye kotwaal to ab dar kaahe kaa” (My beloved has become kotwaal, so now I have noting to fear).

“Chunariyaa” (1948) is a very old and forgotten movie. It had Wasti,Pran, Manorama etc in lead roles.

Madhubala (born 19 feb 1933) made her screen debut at a very young age of about 8-9 years in 1942 in the movie “Basant” as a child artist under the name of Baby Mumtaz. She worked under this name for the next few years as a child artist. She began working in grown up roles in late 1940s, when she was barely 15 years of age, and it was sometime in late 1940s- early 1950s that she was given the screen name of Madhubala with which she is known today.
