Today’s song is from the film ‘Roop Sundari’ (1949).
‘Roop’ is yet another favorite word of filmmakers. A total of 17 films carried the word ‘Roop’ in the beginning of titles. The first such film was ‘Roop Basant’, made in 1933 and the latest is ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja’ from 1993. As expected there were repetitions of the titles. The stats say ‘Roop Basant’ (3), ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja’ (2), ‘Roop Kumari’ (2), ‘Roop Lekha’ (3), and ‘Roop Sundari’ (2). Five titles were exclusively once only.

I think I had never gone through the songs of this movie earlier. Our regular reader on the blog Shri Deepak Patwardhan ji has send me ‘farmaaish’ of this song (he had even offered to note down the lyrics of this song too, however I told him that I will take care of that ). And this is the reason that I got a chance to present a song from this movie on the blog today.

Whenever I select a stunt film song to discuss and start writing the post, I become very nostalgic and emotional. Rafi sahab sang 80 + songs under C. Ramchandra, starting from 1946 to 1977 beginning with Bachchon ka Khel(1) and Safar(2) in 1946. This is followed by 6 songs in ‘Saajan’(1947), two each in “Khidki’ and ‘Nadiya ke Paar’ in 1948.
Two of the most melodious Solos, which made both Rafi sahab and C. Ramchandra , famous have seen the light of day by this time. ‘These are ‘keh ke bhi na aaye tum, ab chhupne lage taare’ in Safar 1946 and ‘ham ko tumhaara hi aasra tum hamaare ho na ho’ in Saajan 1947. Geeta Dutt, Lalita Deulkar and Shamshad Begum feature in group songs and duets with Rafi in all these films till 1949.

With passage of time, we in this blog have become sedate and relaxed, as befits people who have matured (read aged). 🙂 Things that we found exciting in the past fail to enthuse us any longer. The sense of keen anticipation is no longer there. People in the past would begin to think and talk in advance about forthcoming important blog events. That is no longer the case.
Take the case of Blog Century posts. This regular event used to be a keenly anticipated event in the past, even when such an even used to occur once every fortnight. Today, this event has become more rare and happens once in two months (or more), and yet goes largely unnoticed.

Today’s song is from the film Ladli-1949. This was one of the popular films of MD Anil Biswas in those times. He was still in his prime, but on the downward curve past his prime. By mid 50’s, films came at a snail’s pace to him and then in a few years he left Mumbai, shifted to New Delhi and his life took a 90 degree turn, personally and professionally.
