Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’ से ‘ह’ तक (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 25

‘न’
“नादान ना बन ए मतवाले”
There are quite a few songs by Rafi Sb, starting with the alphabet ‘न’, and which are still to be posted. As I was in the process to shortlist the song for today’s alphabet, I came across this unfamiliar song from the film ‘Rangeela’ from 1953. The thing that struck me was the title line “Naadaan Na Ban Ae Matwaale”. The first thought that came to my mind – that this is a sad, philosophical type of song, kind of similar to “Moorakh Hai Insaan” (‘Main Aur Mera Bhai’, 1961) and “Mat Bhool Arre Insaan” (‘Mastaana’, 1954). Not really inclined for a poignant song today, I skipped this, and moved ahead in the list. But on second thought; do not know what prompted me to come back to this song, and I decided to listen to it. And I am surprised – this turns out to be actually a fun song, on the topic of eve teasing. And I knew I had my selection for today’s post. 🙂

I came to know about the film NIRMOHI (1952) sometime in the late 1960s when my friend and office colleague, Vijay Nafde introduced me to his 78 RPM record collections. During our periodic get together in his house, he used to make me listen to some rare songs (of that time) and that included songs from unheard films for which music directors like C Ramchandra, Madan Mohan, Roshan etc composed the songs. ‘Nirmohi’ (1952) was one of those unheard films from which I remember to have listened the only song, dukhiyaare naina dhoondhen piyaa ko .

For the last eight months or so, I have been scouting for some rare songs which are yet to be posted on the Blog. My first preference was to get those rare songs which have not yet made their presence in YT. During my search, I concentrated mainly of the songs of 1940s and about 50 of such songs have already made their appearances in the Blog. There are some more in my kitty of the 1940s segment, a few of which have already been uploaded on YT. But I thought I would take some pause for the 1940s and divert my attention to the rare songs of the 1950s.
For the 1950s songs, my initial experience showed that in respect of well-known playback singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Talat Mehmood, Kishore Kumar, Suraiya, Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhonsle, Suman Kalyanpur etc, there was no need for me to find their rare songs. Almost all of their songs for which mp3 clips are available on the internet, have already been uploaded on YT. I believe that all these playback singers have their fans in YT who would ensure that almost all the songs of their idols get posted on YT. That leaves me room to search for rare songs of only the second string and other lesser known playback singers for the 1950s segment. And I like to explore songs of such category of playback singers.

It is a well-known fact that the singing career of Suman Kalyanpur in Hindi film industry remained under the shadow of Lata Mangeshkar mainly because many in the Hindi film industry felt that her voice was too close to that of Lata Mangeshkar. When Suman Kalyanpur started her playback singing career in 1954, Lata Mangeshkar was already well established in Hindi films. When the choice came for the music directors between the two, producers and/or distributors would pressurize music directors to engage Lata Mangeshkar as her songs were more saleable than that of the new comers. There could be some other reasons also which stunted her career path.

Music lovers remember 31 july 1980 as the day when Rafi left for his heavenly abode. It was on the same day exactly one hundred years ago from that day (on 31 july 1880) that Dhanpat Rai Srivastav was born in a village called Lamhi in eastern UP.
Google India today is showing a google doodle on Dhanpat Rai Srivastav.
