The 15th of August, is a special date in the calendar for India.

Every year, there are events across the country celebrating the day. There is flag-hoisting in schools, offices and public places. There are patriotic songs played on radio. There’s a lot more to mark the date and occasion.

All of this is understandable. After all, it was on the 15th of August that many years ago, India became an independent nation, free from British rule.

6 August is remembered as Hiroshima day. It was on this day that in 1945 that Hiroshima became the first unfortunate city to be subjected to the dropping of Atom Bomb.

Three days later, on 9 august 1945, another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Kokura was the primary target, but that was obscured by cloud and smoke, so the secondary target of Nagasaki became the unfortunate victim of this second atom bomb, named ‘Fat Man’. The bomb exploded at 11:02 a.m. at an approximate altitude of 1,800 feet. 35, 000 people, nearly 15 % of the population of the city were killed.

These two bombings finally persuaded Japan to surrender and that signalled the end of second World war.

Regulars of this blog know that we in this blog have had a few events that were eagerly anticipated and looked forward to. The event of the blog clocking 10000th is still fresh in everyone’s mind.

10000 is a round figure but we subsequently managed to create anticipation for some unusual numbered posts as well- what we called honky tonk numbers. Post number 11111 in the blog was a very special number. People began to make guesses about the song that was likely to become song post number 11111 in the blog. There were tell tale signals and clues that regulars could work on. By the time the target approached closer, regulars, after some false leads began to close in on the correct song. By the time the event arrived, people had already guessed (correctly) about the song that was going to be song post number 11111 in the blog.

ruke nahin koi yahaan naami ho ki anaam

— Gopal Das Saxena ‘Neeraj’

With the passing away of Gopal Das Saxena ‘Neeraj’ in the evening of July 19, 2018, the country has lost the last doyen of the progressive school of Hindi poetry. And with this, we have lost another ‘Sahir Ludhianvi’ of Hindi film songs. His association with Hindi film industry especially during 1970-75 had taken the Hindi film music to a new height. I would say that Neeraj has elongated the golden period of Hindi film music.

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 15
———————————————————————

It has been a while since my last post here – and I have no excuses for this. I will not cite “been busy” as an excuse, because, if I’m honest, I could certainly have found time for a post. If anything, the only reason for not posting is my sheer laziness. And laziness is never, and should never be, an acceptable excuse. So, no excuses. Mea culpa.

One thing though. While I might not be posting frequently, this blog is never far from my heart. It might not be apparent from my recent (non-existent) interactions but this is fact. Whether I post here or not, this blog is very special to me. After all, I have been involved with it from day one. So I request everyone to please excuse my prolonged absence. (Some might consider it not such a bad thing. 🙂 )
