I have not been able to discuss songs at the rate that I would have liked. Hopefully I will be able to resume my normal rate of discussing songs within a couple days or so.

In the early 70s Bangalore was heaven on earth. It was a city you could walk around in, full of gardens and broad sidewalks. If you were a movie lover, this was the place to be. My best friend Aruna lived a few houses away from me, we were constant companions to each other. A short distance from our house was Kempegowda Circle, or KG Circle, that was like a jungle of cinema houses. There were times when we found an empty ticket window, bought a couple of tickets, got into the hall and asked people in seats next to us about the movie that was playing. Some of the halls were so close together, it was hard to figure out where we were.

“Caarvaan” (1971) is one of the first films that I remember having seen on the big screen. And I was then too young to understand the sentiments of sensuality. In later years, when I would revisit this film, on TV and in reruns, I would be more mature to appreciate the emotions and passions ensconced in this song. This film was the probably the first film in which Aruna Irani attracted attention as an accomplished character actor with a wholesome meaty role as a gypsy girl, so much in love with a truck driver.

One of my many weaknesses is that at any given point in time I’m humming or singing a song, completely oblivious to the surroundings. This has resulted in embarrassing situations at times (like when I burst out singing “chhoo lene do naazuk honthon ko” once while waiting for a flight in the departure lounge in an airport causing some heads to turn). Now, if I’d been Rafi saab or Talat Mahmood or Kishore, I’d probably get away with it – but I have no illusions about my singing having anything close to a favourable impact on the unintended and hapless targets of my indiscretions. It is just one of those things that I need to watch out for, I suppose.

“Raftaar” (1975) was a movie that was not quite A grade, nor it was an entirely B grade movie. In 1970s, such movies, which were neither here nor there tended to have Vinod Mehra and Mausami Chatterji in them as the lead pair. Put another way, they were poor producer’s Dharmendra-Hema Malini.

I am aware of the movie “Laila Majnu” (1976) but I was not aware that a movie called “Daastaan e Laila Majnu” was released two years prior to that. This movie, viz. “Daastaan e Laila Majnu” (1974) was obviously a B grade movie. It was produced and directed by R L Desai. Starcast of the movie included names like Kanwaljeet, Anamika, B. M. Vyas, Dulari, Jayshree T., S. N. Tripathi, K. N. Singh, etc.

“Abdullah” (1980) was a movie that received quite a bit of publicity during its making, but people lost interest once it was released. I do not know why. This movie never came to my town, which is normally the facte of B grade movies and not a movie which was produced and directed by an A grade Producer like err Sanjay Khan :).

Ae bas ab tarsaana chhodo

It is one of those songs that I liked a lot without having an inkling of its details. The fact that the song was sung by Kishore Kumar was all that mattered. Of course, I assumed that a song this popular could only be an R D Burman composition.
