I mean, films get started with very good intentions, but one can not predict whether the film will be completed, censored and released. There are several films which do not reach the theatres.

The 1937 film ‘Mukti’ from the banner of New Theatres, was considered a very bold move. A path breaking film that explores the complexities of relationship between a man and a woman. It was daring theme for its times, especially being tackled by a big name production house. The storyline is written by and the film is directed by PC Barua, who was at the height of his creative energies and his career. He was already a big name with New Theatres, having directed the 1935 hit film ‘Devdas’ for both Hindi and Bengali versions. He also played the lead role in the Bengali version.

Today (27 october 2014) is the 13th death anniversary of Pradeep Kumar (4 january 1925- 27 october 2001). Pradeep Kumar and a few of his contemporaries, viz. Hindi movie music was predominanatly based on classical music during the first decade (viz 1930s). It was in early 1940s that Ghulam Haider introduced Punjabi Folk music based songs in “Khazaanchi” (1941). This paradigm shift was avidly lapped up by public and this paved the way for folk music based songs in Hindi movies. Ghulam Haider was followed by Naushad who introdced UP folk music in his compositions. That opened the floodgates and then we had different music directors composing songs based on folk music from different regions.

What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died? Thus starts the very first line of one of the most famous novels ever written. “Love Story” by Erich Segal first published on 14th February 1970 has sold more than a 22 million copies worldwide and has been translated into more than 20 languages. A novel of hardly a hundred pages, it captivates the reader from the very first line. Today is Raja Swaminathan’s second birthday! On this blog, I mean! I don’t know Raja’s age, but what I see and hear from him, he must be very young and very active. As many of you must already know, Raja is a passionate blogger. Yes, passionate is the word, which I would use to describe Raja in one word. Raja is passionate about politics, social politics and not party politics. Yes, he has a keen sense of justice and injustice. He is aware of the many wrong things going on in this world. I admire this quality in him very highly. What I admire about him is also his ability to put all his wonderful thoughts in words. When I sit and torture myself with the composition of each sentence. To him his nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs flow with an ease which would put a bubbling stream to shame. What’s more they flow in perfect syntax. Then he also has a wonderful sense of humour, particularly his PJs are very funny. And going by all his posts and comments on fb, Raja comes across as a very nice person. Now, you must have realized that I have not met him, although I’ve a feeling I already know him quite well. Dearest Raja, please try to always remain the person you are, Happy Birthday!
