#The Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #

In this post I am presenting a song from the 1970 movie ‘Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’.

“Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi-1970” was produced for ‘Vasu Films’, Madras, by Vasu Menon. It was directed by V. Madhusudana Rao. It had Sanjay Khan, Leena Chandavarkar, Jagdeep, Anupama, Manmohan Krishna, Sundar, N. S. Bedi, Sharma, Pratima Devi, Bilkis, Shamim, Lalita Pawar, Shashikala, Om Prakash, Madhumati, Jayshree T. As per information available the story of this movie was written by Barampuram Kollady. Its’ dialogues were written by Rajinder Krishan who also penned down the lyrics for the seven songs in this movie. Music of this film was composed by R.D. Burman. The playback singers for this movie are Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, Mohd Rafi, and Usha Mangeshkar. I guess that this movie was not a successful movie of its time and hence its’ songs remain as lesser-known songs and they were also forgotten easily.

Today’s song is from the film Amrapali-1945.

1945 was the year when the devastating II World War ended and the film industry heaved a sigh of relief. Many irksome regulations were relaxed. There was no force now to make Propaganda films for war, no shortage of Raw Film and plenty of Finance available through black money, generated during the war times. However, the year saw only 73 Hindi films made.

Continuing with the series on Asha Bhosle singing for actresses whose first names begin with the letter “A”, we arrive at the name Ashwini Bhave. I had already mentioned Ashwini Bhave in the post on the song gharwaalee banaa le mujhe.

When the film Henna (1991) was launched, RK Films organized a major talent search. This was heavily publicized by the studio’s PR department. When Zeba Bakhtiyar was selected and announced as the heroine in the title role, a footnote was attached to many articles stating that RK Films was still searching for an actress to play the second heroine. In various interviews, Rishi Kapoor and Randhir Kapoor complained that many established heroines had declined the offer. They argued that the second heroine’s role was as important as the title role and was comparable in significance to Rajendra Kumar’s role in Sangam (1964). Various names were circulated as having turned down the role. If I remember correctly, Juhi Chawla, Meenakshi Seshadri, and Madhuri Dixit were among those mentioned. Eventually, the role went to Ashwini Bhave, who was not yet widely known in Hindi cinema.

Today’s song is from the social film Albeli-1945.

There were 3 Same Title films in 1945, 1955 and 1974. To match it, there were 4 films titled Albela in 1851, 1971, 1990 and 2001. There was also Albela mastana in 1967.

This was a Talwar production, Calcutta film. Directed by its owner R.C.Talwar, it had music by G.A. Chishti. There were 2 lyricists – Shanti Swarup ‘Kaif’ and Chishti himself. HGFK, however, does not credit any song to any Lyricist or any singer. Thus, one has to depend upon his own judgement about the singer or believe the uploader’s mention.

The cast of the film was Ramola, Rooplekha, Manorama, Usha, Sunder, Heeralal and others. Film Albeli’s review came in the March – 46 issue of Film India magazine. As usual, Baburao Patel had nothing good to say about this film. The film’s story centred around the love affair of a street girl and a Gypsy boy, who is loved by two more girls. The film was released on 22-12-1945 at Central Cinema, Bombay. The story was by Talwar himself. Dialogues and Screenplay was by J.S.Casshyap. The film’s hero was Satish.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet #

Today’s song is from the 1973 movie ‘Phir Aayaa Toofaan’. It was directed by B.J. Patel for ‘People Pictures, Bombay’. This movie was produced by Dhanpatrai. I do not remember to have heard about this movie earlier or having watched it in my child hood. This seems to be lesser known movie. But this movie is available on internet and those interested can watch it there. Geet Kosh mentions this movie as a ‘social’ movies. However it seems to be a ‘c’ grade stunt movie.

The cast of this movie included Dara Singh, Madhu Malini, Anand Chani, Madhu Malandhar, Satyadeep, Shery, Surya Kumar, Gul Hamid, Rekha Chauhan, Radhabai, R.P. Sharma, Kamal, Ajit, Rahi, Gil, Neela, Mahendra Zaveri, B.M. Vyas, Miss Reeta, Master Virendra, Randhawa, Master Amrik Randhawa, Harbhajan Singh, Saudagar Singh, Lucky Ram and others. Story and screenplay of this movie was written by T. Rebello. And dialogues of this movie were written by G. Sethuraman. Editing of this movie was done by Baburao Barodekar. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 17.09.1973.

Today’s song is from an early era film – Jailor-1938.

1938 was an interesting year in the early life of the Talkie films. The film making studios had firm footing with a studio system and they tried a variety of subjects in their films. In the 88 Hindi films produced in 1938, one finds almost every Genre of film subjects, except perhaps the usual Folk stories and Historical themes. Comedy, Tragedy, Fiction, Jungle stories, Costume, Socials, Musicals, Mythologicals, you name it and you had it. Content and technical expertise had improved as films on famous novels were made.
