I am on a different thought track today. I was thinking of the approaching birthday season in my family. Thats what I call it as 3 from a family of 4 have their birthdays in the 15 day period from 23rd December to 6th January. My daughter leads the pack and son (he is the older one) brings up the rear. So I was down memory lane thinking of the time when they had just begun to walk, talk, sing or dance etc. So that put me on to the song I want to discuss today. This was a song to which my one year old daughter first shook her leg for.

“Babu” (1985) was a remake of a Tamil movie of 1971 of the same name which was in turn remake of a Malayalam movie of 1965 (called Odayil Ninnu).

“Babu” (1985) was produced by V R Parmeshwaram and directed by A G Trilokchandar. The movie had Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Rati Agnihotri, Madan Puri, Rajendranath etc in it.

When I was a pre teen and even teenager, I did not like old songs at all. In fact, I and my peers found old songs as sources of inadvertent amusement when we were tired of disliking them. We wondered all the time why old singers could not sing like the present day singers.

The movie had Amithabh bachchan, Sridevi,(Akkineni) Nagarjuna, Shilpa Shirodkar, Vikram Gokhale, Kiran Kumar, Anjana Mumtaz, Danny Denzongpa, Anjan Shrivasta, Aravind Rathod, Beena, Ali Khan, Mini, Tabassum, Bharat Kapoor, Deepak Shirke, Shammi, Surendra Pal, Bhooshan, Jeevan, Vikaas Anand, Master Emran etc in it.

Today (16 august) is the birthday of Saif Ali Khan, known to younger generation as a Hindi movie actor but to my generation , he is the son of Former Indian test cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore, the heartthrob of millions. The parents of Saif Ali Khan were married just after the Chrishtmas of december 1969 and Chhote Nawab was born on 16 august 1970 :).

Janmashtami is a festival that is celebrated all over the country by all hindu communities. It signifies the birth of Lord Krishna in the Jail where Devaki was imprisoned. The story is that after he was born Vasudeva transports him to Gokul to the home of Yashoda. Hence the next day, viz. the day after Janmashtami is celebrated as Gokulashtami with his life in Gokul being re-enacted as Dahi Handi. As Yashoda was the one who brought him up, she is often regarded as the Maiyya of Krishna. For me the festival entails having sweets being fried, and then stored in the house for me to eat in “krishna-style” for the next few days. 😀
