Today (9 june 2016) happens to be the 26th death anniversary of Asad Bhopali (10 july 1921- 9 june 1990 ). The acronym of this blog ( Atul song a day) also reads ASAD. That way, many of us in this blog regard Asad Bhopali as the patron saint lyricist of this blog. 🙂

Mukesh and his Composers – 10

Wishing Usha Khanna on her 74th birth anniversary, a celebration full of all things good and happy.
For some reason, Usha Khanna never received the recognition and fame that she so rightfully deserves. She is not the first, but definitely is the most successful and talented of a handful of female composers in the Hindi film industry. Born on 7th October 1941, she composed music for her first film at a very young age of 17 with ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ 1959. This was also after more than one year of a sort of apprenticeship and convincing the world that composing was an easy task for her.

Today (9 july 2015) is the 77th birth anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar (9 July 1938 – 6 November 1985). In a movie world where most actors were afraid of playing roles other than the ones they were typed cast in, Sanjeev Kumar would play any kind of roles, without worrying about his past image as an actor. He would play the roles that other heroes would not touch with a barge pole, and he would carry them off with aplomb. He had played roles of mentally challenged man (in Khilona-1970), Deaf and dumb (in Koshish), father of an actor older than him (father of Shashi Kapoor in Trishul), Husband, father as well as father in law of the same actress (Jaya Bhaduri) in different movies, etc. And I have not yet mentioned his role of Thakur in Sholay (1975). In “Naya Din Nayi Raat”, he played nine roles !
In brief, Sanjeev Kumar was an actor who never allowed himself to be typedcast. He accepted any kinds of roles, not worrying how that role was going to affect his image. And he came up with flying colours in all these roles.

There is an email from Avinash ji today morning wherein he has commented about the pace of posting in the current couple of weeks. I quote – “. . . and this is where all my daily routine is getting affected, because the blog and the posts is my biggest motivation and new posts are not coming at earlier pace (leave alone my contributions 🙂 even others’ are very less, no doubt, as you had said our BOSSES must be having some other priorities#”. So not exactly taken by any surprises, still it is heartening to note that the daily routine of our fellow travelers is entwined with the set of daily posts that appear on this blog. I know there have been similar discussions and comments in the past. And the spirit continues. 🙂

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 19

There is a film from 1969 – ‘Tumse Achhaa Kaun Hai”. This film has a classic song, Rafi Sb singing for Shammi Kapoor, that has not yet made it to this blog. (Yes, I am surprised too 🙂 ). The mukhdaa of the song is an animated yet a resigned expression of helplessness – so many ladies to be loved, whom should I love – “Kis Ko Pyaar Karoon, Kaise Pyaar Karoon”. The situation is not too different, when I am trying to select a song for posting here. Atul ji mentions a specific requirement, and as I sit down to choose a song according to that, I find myself in the same quandary – “Kis Ko Post Karoon, Kaise Post Karoon – Ye Bhi Hai, Wo Bhi Hai. . .”.

“Dil Ka Soona Saaz Taraana Dhoondhega” (‘’Ek Naari Do Roop’, 1973) – a song that has become an everlasting signature memory of its creators. The singing voice of Rafi Sb that instills a restless, discontented pathos into the words of remorse that follows accomplishments. The words that are written by Asad Bhopali, touch the theme of an unfulfilled genius. And the music, it comes from the mind of Ganesh, to whom the sentiments and the theme of this song, fit to the very end.
Remembering music director Ganesh on the anniversary of his passing away (28th March).
The name of Ganesh is associated with an illustrious family of musicians. Son of Ram Prasad Sharma, and younger brother to Pyaarelal Ram Prasad Sharma (of the Laxmikant Pyaarelal duo). Besides Pyaarelal, his other brothers have reaped fame for themselves in the film and non-film music arenas.
In the beginning of 1960s, the name of Ganesh came to be acknowledged as the key contributor to the success of the music of Laxmikant Pyaarelal. The effect of this impression in the industry was so strong that by the mid 1960s, he got about 10 assignments as an independent music director, even before a single film with his music had even got to the studio floors. In 1966, when the films with his music started to appear in theatres, the audiences were swept with the stunning sounds of “Hum Tere Bin Jee Na Sakenge Sanam” (‘Thakur Jarnail Singh’, 1966), “Hum Jahaan Hain Wo Maqaam Husn Aur Ishq Hai” (‘Husn Aur Ishq’, 1966), “Intzaar Ka Aalam Tanhaai Aur Hum” (‘Shera Daku’, 1966) and more. 1967 was no less with songs like “Zulfon Ka Rangeen Saaya Hai Tauba Khudaaya” and “Main Jo Galey lag Jaaungi Tera Badan Jal Jaayega” from ‘Anjaam’, and in 1968 the audiences were treated to songs like “Raja Aana Hamaare Banlge Pe” and “Main To Khadi Re Khadi Re Aankh Ladi Re Ladi Re” from ‘Sab ka Ustad’.
