Sadhana was one of the biggest female star of her time in 1960s. But her aura was all but gone by late 1960s and 1970s. There were several reasons for that including the fact that she fell ill at the prime of her career that kept her out of movies in late 1960s. By the time she recovered and tried to make a comeback, the Hindi movie world had moved on and the new generation of movie goers had their own stars among the newer crop of female actors.

A few days back, my wife lamented that our daughter takes her for granted and does not take her suggestions seriously(mujhe ghar ki murgi samajhti hai). What is new about it, I thought to myself, because my wife too takes me for granted. :). And in turn, both of us often underestimate our daughter. The three of us take our pets for granted and the pets return the favour by taking us for granted. 🙂

Roothh ke hamse kahin

I start this article with a confession that Hindi film songs of post-1980 period, by and large, are not on my search radar unless I come across some of them by chance. It was one of such chances that took me to a song ‘rooth ke hamse kahin jab chale jaaoge tum’ from the film JO JEETA WOHI SIKANDAR (1992). I was attracted by its first line of lyrics. The song was written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and that made me to watch the video clip. And what a sentimental song relating to brother-brother relationship! As I watched the video clip, some reminiscences of my childhood days flashed before my moist eyes like a slide show.

When ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ was released in 1959, the only thing I remembered at that time about the movie was that it was a film in which Asha Parekh was introduced as a new heroine to pair with Shammi Kapoor. The film was a super hit and its songs became very popular. But little did I know at that time that the film’s songs were composed by a new music director called Usha Khanna. In fact, I carried a wrong impression for some time that O P Nayyar was the music director of this film. Even for her second film ‘ Hum Hindustani’ which was released in 1960, I thought that the music director was Dattaram, the music assistant to Shankar-Jaikishan. I carried these impressions as the music compositions of these two films were very close to the styles of O P Nayyar and Shankar Jaikishan respectively. After about 4 decades when I revisited her songs, mostly of 60s and 70s, I felt that she had developed her own style of music for the songs of her later films.
