Manna Dey was an outsider as far as singing mainstream songs were concerned. Unlike other singers, he was reduced to singing unusual songs viz songs for lesser characters in the movie, viz comedian etc. Difficult songs, unlikely to get popular with lay public viz semi classical songs were also given to him to sing. In fact, many of such semi classical songs were included in the movies to provide comic relief.

I have posted one song from “Dil Hi to hai”. That song viz “Tum agar mujhko na chaho to koi baat nahin” was sung by Mukesh and it is a very well known Mukesh song.
This movie also had another memorable song picturised on Raj Kapoor. This time the singer was not Mukesh, but Manna Dey. And this song is just as wonderful, if not more. This song has to be among the most memorable semi classical songs in the history of Bollywood movies. Sahir had written the lyrics and Roshan was the music director.

It is one of the iconic songs in Bollywood history, one that I have listened to many a times since childhood. That was in 1970s, and now we are in 2008, and this song was from circa 1950s! has this song aged, or has it become less known after all these decades ? No chance. this song continues to be just a popular as any venerable 52 year old song can expect to be. And this song is in good sprightly health too, one that is unlikely to become forgotten with passage of time. It is a timeless classic, there is no doubt about that.

I grew in that era when masses would run away a mile from classical songs or classical dances. There were few takers for such kind of art.
Those days, some bollywood makers on a shoe string budget would make movies different from mainstream movies. Such movies earned rave reviews and critical praise, but these movies were rejected by masses. Film festivals were often the only place one could watch such movies.

And only now I have come to know that this song was from Seeta and Geeta. all these days I thought that “Seeta aur Geeta” only had songs sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle.
