When Khyati Behn sent in the lyrics of this song, she said, and I quote , that she “. . . was
to see that this film hasn’t yet found its place on the blog. Koi baat nahi, ab kar dete hai. 🙂 “. Well we all know, with Khyati Behn, the messaging has to be something out of the ordinary.

In the second half of 1960s and the first half of 1970s, Shashi Kapoor was the busiest actor in the industry. After his struggle years of early 1960s, and riding on the success of films like ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ (1965), he started getting offers in such huge numbers, and because he did not turn down any one, there was a time when he was booked for almost 5 to 7 years at a single stretch.

I am sure that music lovers remember the song ‘Paani Mein Jaley Mera Gora Badan Paani Mein’ – it became quite popular in its time. But I wonder if folks will remember the name of the film it is from. It is sung by Suman Kalyanpur and is from a lesser known movie ‘Munim ji’ of 1972. I remember that it was frequently played on the radio in those years (my childhood years 🙂 ). And I am wondering it is yet to be posted on this blog.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 14

There are many recipes to make memorable songs. In my experience, one of them is – a B/C grade stunt film (the more obscure and forgotten, the better), an unfamiliar name of the lyricist, the voice of Rafi Sb, and the music of one of the lesser known music directors. And voila, you have a fabulous and memorable song. The song itself may be obscure, unfamiliar and possibly unheard for a long time. But once you hear it – it is all a ‘wow’.

‘Rafi Ke Dard Bhare Geet’ is a famous genre of Rafi songs. Some of the most endearing and touching songs in Hindi films are the sad songs sung by Rafi Sb. Almost every hindi movie has a sad song. Amongst them, the soulful singing by Rafi Sb in these songs is widely acknowledgde as the best. There are many movies where Rafi Sb has only one song even when he is not the favored singing voice for the film. That song generally is a song for the second line artist, or a background song, or a title song, and in many cases, it is a sad song. Then there are many movies in which all male songs are in the voice of Rafi Sb. There are movies where he sang romantic song, light hearted song, sad song, comic song, qawwali, folk and spiritual songs for different actors. There are numerous examples for both these cases.

This iconic song from ‘Pyasa” was posted in the blog way back in 2009. I just revisited the page. There is only one comment there, so I was in two minds whether to leave my take on this song there on the page or include them in this post . I choose the latter so here goes:
