Blog Day :

2486 Post No. : 11111

(You must have heard the song – “Badaa Hi CID Hai Wo Neeli Chhatri Waala”.  It is on our blog.  Seems as if this song needs to be modified.  Like This – “Bade Hi CID Hain, Ye Atul Gang Ke Members, Gaana Guess Karne Mein Hain Awwal Number”.  Sorry, this one is not yet on the blog).

I have heard this song before on the radio, but I did not have any clue to its details.  Today, browsing online, searching for something different, I bumped into this song.  As I read the initial details, and then started to do some more checking, I realized this song has a very interesting and significant antecedents that make for a very interesting discussion.

When Khyati Behn sent in the lyrics of this song, she said, and I quote , that she “. . . was KB Exp to see that this film hasn’t yet found its place on the blog. Koi baat nahi, ab kar dete hai. 🙂 “.  Well we all know, with Khyati Behn, the messaging has to be something out of the ordinary.

In the second half of 1960s and the first half of 1970s, Shashi Kapoor was the busiest actor in the industry.  After his struggle years of early 1960s, and riding on the success of films like ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ (1965), he started getting offers in such huge numbers, and because he did not turn down any one, there was a time when he was booked for almost 5 to 7 years at a single stretch.

“Life is short but art and for that matter music is permanent. There is no death of a true art and so is it with music.”

These are the words of one who is known as the ‘Gentleman Musician’ amongst the community of music directors and musicians, both in Bombay and in Calcutta.  Vistas Ardeshir Balsara – a name that is part of a long list of very talented musicians, whose contributions to the making of the film music has been immense.  These musicians, instrumentalists and arrangers, most of whom were  experienced and capable of being music directors in their own right, rarely got to appear in the limelight and be recognized for their work.  V Balsara is one such gifted musicians who did get the opportunity to step out from behind the curtain, and be known for his art.  I am sure all will remember the iconic song “Ae Mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal” (‘Daag’, 1952) in all its flavors.  The piano accordion in this song is played by him.

Remembering V Balsara on the anniversary of his passing away (24th March).

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 5 # Mohammed Rafi – 2

I am sure that music lovers remember the song ‘Paani Mein Jaley Mera Gora Badan Paani Mein’ – it became quite popular in its time.  But I wonder if folks will remember the name of the film it is from.  It is sung by Suman Kalyanpur and is from a lesser known movie ‘Munim ji’ of 1972. I remember that it was frequently played on the radio in those years (my childhood years  🙂 ).  And I am wondering it is yet to be posted on this blog.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 14
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

There are many recipes to make memorable songs.  In my experience, one of them is – a B/C grade stunt film (the more obscure and forgotten, the better), an unfamiliar name of the lyricist, the voice of Rafi Sb, and the music of one of the lesser known music directors.  And voila, you have a fabulous and memorable song.  The song itself may be obscure, unfamiliar and possibly unheard for a long time.  But once you hear it – it is all a ‘wow’.

Mohammed Rafi – The Incomparable – 5

‘Rafi Ke Dard Bhare Geet’ is a famous genre of Rafi songs.  Some of the most endearing and touching songs in Hindi films are the sad songs sung by Rafi Sb.  Almost every hindi movie has a sad song.  Amongst them, the soulful singing by Rafi Sb in these songs is widely acknowledgde as the best.  There are many movies where Rafi Sb has only one song even when he is not the favored singing voice for the film.  That song generally is a song for the second line artist, or a background song, or a title song, and in many cases, it is a sad song.  Then there are many movies in which all male songs are in the voice of Rafi Sb.  There are movies where he sang romantic song, light hearted song, sad song, comic song, qawwali, folk and spiritual songs for different actors.  There are numerous examples for both these cases.

This iconic song from ‘Pyasa” was posted in the blog way back in 2009. I just revisited the page. There is only one comment there, so I was in two minds whether to leave my take on this song there on the page or include them in this post . I choose the latter so here goes:
