“Apna Desh” was a movie that appealed to majority of movie goers. It had almost every thing that the movie going janta wanted. In those days, movie going public were undergoing a change of taste. Movies where hero sang sad songs and got bashed by the villains were proving unpopular. People wanted the heroes of 1970s to be more assertive and active than just singing sad songs.

It is one Bollywood movie that is inspired from a western movie and novel. But unlike most such inspired movies, this movie improves and enhances the original and comes up with a memorable tale that has the ability to move just about any person who has watched it.

This movie “Manzil” was one of the unsuccessful movies of Amitabh Bachchan, but this one song from this movie, viz “Rimjhim gire saawan” has become the stuff of legends already. It is one of the first songs that comes to mind when one thinks of rain songs.

Forget the talk of modernisation and all, when it comes to selecting life partners, Indians are ultra conservatives. In olden days, parents would decide whom their kids would marry and the kids, often underage would see their spouses for the first time at the time of the wedding, and sometimes, even later.

I have posted over a hundred songs of different natures in this blog so far. Songs of 1970s that I am posting were those that influenced me a lot, as I was in my formative years during those days. The influence of R D Burman as music director was something that needed to be experienced. Most of his songs just left people spell bound.

It was one of those Rajesh Khanna movies that I watched when it was released in 1970s and thoughroughly enjoyed the movie. Those were the days when the era of Hero singing sad songs throughout the movie and getting bashed by the villain ( Pran, typically) was coming to an end. The new age hero of 1970s took it lying down only till the interval and then took to action in the second half. “Apna desh ” was one such movie.

This movie Adhikaar (1971) may have been forgotten, but this movie had some very nice songs in it. I had already posted one song “Rekha O Rekha” from this movie. Here is another song, a qawwali from this movie, this time.
And what a qawwali ! R D Burman proves that he was not just a composer of foot tapping western tunes, he could create nice qawwalis as well. And this qawwali is just as foot tapping as any other R D Burman compositions. This must rank as one of the best qawwalis in Bollywood movies, that is for sure.

I heard this song many a times when this song started playing on loudspeakers and radio in 1972, and then forgot all about it. Now, 35-36 years later, I rediscovered this song again. And only now I have come to know that this song was from Seeta and Geeta. all these days I thought that “Seeta aur Geeta” only had songs sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle.

Kishore Kumar has sung lots of songs that could be described as happy, romantic, comedy, sad etc. But there was one category of song where Kishore has not figured too many times. And this is the category of ghazal.
Here is a song that could be called a ghazal. If it is not so, plese correct me. This is a Kishore Kumar solo song, and quite a nice song. Yes, it is picturised on Rajesh Khanna. How did you guess that ?

We have seen how true blue shayars like Hasrat Jaipuri, Majrooh etc could come up with funny lyrics leading to some great fun songs. Here we see Javed Akhtar, scriptwriter turned shayar, emulating his illustrious predecessors. Here lyrics are written in a common real life language, and not in the usual high sounding words. This was one of the first such songs as far as I can recall.
This song is preceded by some great funny scenes in the movie involving the hero and the heroine, and the fun continues in this song, when the two go to attend a wedding party.
