Today (8 june 2019) is the birthday of Dimple Khanna nee Kapadia (Dob 8 june 1957). She was 16 years old when her debut movie “Bobby”(1973) took Hindi movie world by storm. This dubut movie was goin to be her first and only movie for next decade. After “Bobby”(1973) came the surprise announcement of her marriage to the reigning superstar Rajesh Khanna in 1973. Rajesh Khanna at that time was 31, viz twice in age to her.

Today (10 may 2017) is the third anniversary of passing away of character actor Sudhir (10 May, 2014).

Now the last I had seen him in a movie was in ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’ in 2007 in a blink and miss role. Then we had also seen him in movies like ‘Dulhe Raja’ (1998) in a slightly less brief role with some comic timing thrown in. Prior to this I can remember him in Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Baadshah’ (1999) where also he had some comedy in the situation of his character. In the interim he was also seen in a few television serials. But of course if someone asked me who Sudhir was I can say that he was the smart guy (smarter than Dev Anand if I am allowed to say) in ‘Gambler’ (1971) who sits besides the heroine, Zahida, in the song “Dil Aaj Shaayar Hai Gham Aaj Naghma Hai“. But I had no material at hand to write about Sudhir. For example, I didn’t know where he was from etc. He played characters that were always behind the scenes in many of his movies like ‘Shareef Badmash’ (1973) etc. I checked online and found that his real name was Bhagwandas Mulchand Luthria. I also learnt that he is uncle to Milan Luthria who has made a few movies in recent times. Then on further googling I also saw that he had produced a movie or two (according to IMDB.com). It seems he was also an assistant director.  But nothing more that would stand out so I am leaving it to our experts in Atuldom to fill about this character artiste.

It’s been a while since my last post here.  And to be absolutely honest, I haven’t even been active on the blog recently.

This is for a variety of reasons, none of which is, thankfully, any cause of worry. I go into this shell from time to time. I hope Atul, and my other friends here, know me long enough now to not mind my absence. It is nothing to do with the blog or with them, it is just me and my bizarre-ness. Anyway, it doesn’t matter – what matters is that I’m back here today.

But why today? What’s so special about today? Well, today is special, not just for one, but for two reasons. Firstly, the 8th of March is celebrated worldwide as International Women’s Day. Secondly, it also happens to be the birthday of Sahir Ludhianvi, one of our most celebrated poets and lyricists.  And most people who know me on this blog know what a special place Sahir has in my heart.  I have often posted his songs here, especially on his birth and death anniversaries. I feel that’s the least I can do for him.

There are people who look forward to the weekends and they raise a silent or may be not so silent hurray as soon as they leave from their office to their home on friday evening. Why are people so happy during weekends and what exactly do they do on weekends ? I feel that working people are happy on realising that they will not have to be at the beck and call of their boss in the office for the next two days. They hope that they would be their own bosses for the next two days. Weekends are especially sweet for those people who feel that they have the misfortune of working with the worst boss in the world. 🙂

No other month begins with a day that is named after itself.  It is only the month of May that starts with a day that is called May Day.  Historically, this specific day has a long history of cultural and social significance.  A history that goes back to pre-Christ era.  The Romans used to celebrate this day as a spring festival.  The festival was called Floralia, in the honor of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers.  Further north, in Germany, this day was celebrated as Walburgis Night.  Coinciding with the arrival of summer weather in the European continent, this day was also celebrated as the first day of summer in some regions.  Community fairs were held, with the traditional dancing around the Maypole, and the beauty contest to select and crown the ‘Queen of May’.  People used to distribute anonymous gifts, called May Baskets, in their neighborhoods.
