Mukesh and his Co-Singers –16

I begin this very special post with a video of Asha Bhosale ji on her own youtube channel.

A short video wherein she speaks about her first 3 songs in Hindi Films.

I tried to trace the chronological accuracy of the songs enlisted in the video. What I found was that the films mentioned seem to be correct, but she has sung two songs in her second film and so her duet in Lekh (1949) could be her fourth and she mentions it as her third.

Sometime later, I will try to trace the exact chronology, but what matters for this post is her first duet in Hindi Films.

A duet with none other than Mukesh.

I request readers to watch the interesting video as Asha ji talks of her initial days in the industry.

I wish the video was fully on Mukesh, but then she digresses on some other topic.

Anyway, her first interaction with Mukesh is quite interesting and only reaffirms and confirms the godly title given to Mukesh, “a noble soul”.

As is evident from the video, Mukesh right from his initial days had no qualms on worldly pleasures and led a simple, honest and righteous life. No wonder the voice emanating from such a noble soul continues to enthral music lovers all over the world to this day.

Coming to this post, I call it special as it is my 100th Mukesh post on the blog.

As on date, I have 120 posts and 100 of them have featured Mukesh.

Every sixth post on an average is by other singers and in these 20 posts, I have covered the complete discography of Surinder Kaur, the singing career of actress Nutan, a mini tri-series on composer and singer Shardha etc. I have also written a few posts on Lata Mangeshkar, Talat Mahmood, Mohd Rafi etc.

I summarise this extremely satisfying journey for self in the short table below.

Series name No. of Posts
Mukesh and his Composers 45+3
Mukesh and his Co-Singers 16
Non-Film songs of Mukesh 13
Mukesh and his Actors 08
Other Mukesh songs 15
TOTAL 100
Other Singers, Composers etc. 20

As I have been writing in the last couple of posts, this special 100th post of Mukesh of mine on the blog features his association with Asha Bhosale.
The table is meticulously prepared and diligently cross-verified with MGK-II and my notes. Having said that, I will be happy to stand corrected for any omission, wrong entry, incomplete credit to other artists etc. And, for some strange reason, I feel that I might have missed a song or two. I sincerely hope it is not the case, and that the list is correct and complete.

So, 58 glorious songs of the duo in Hindi Films. In addition, there are 4 Gujarati and one Punjabi duets of the combo. The same are not included in the table for obvious reasons.

To run through each duet in detail will be a tall order. Of course, the blog links are provided for each song for easy and accurate information which is the hallmark of this blog. So, I will write in general about the duo’s songs and then run through the list.

The popularity of the Mukesh’s duets with Asha Bhosale are probably overshadowed by those that he has sung with her sister, the legendary Lata Mangeshkar.

However, when one goes through the list, it is amply clear, that these duets are also well known, melodious and popular.

I am not sure if this peculiar trait is with self only. The first song that comes to the mind when we recollect the duets of the combo is the one from Junglee (1961) at No 13 in the list above. The song is not featured on the lead actors, not a very popular song and has average composition and lyrics. But for some reason it immediately comes to the mind when their duets are discussed.

I would love to know the opinion of other readers on this aspect.

Gliding through the duets, we start with 1 which has been well described by Asha ji in her video.

2 and 3 are with famous composers of that era.

4 is under the composition of O P Nayyar, who we all know had a very great and long association with Asha Bhosale. Alas, the same was not true with Mukesh who has only 3 duets and a solitary solo under him.

5 is from Rajkumari (1955) under the composition by Ajit Merchant. Apparently, this film was dubbed from a Tamil movie Vanasundari (1951). A review of this film can be found here. The full film in Tamil can be easily found on youtube. Whilst all details including the video of the film in Tamil are available, no song of the Hindi film version seem to be available. I request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the Hindi version and the non-availability of the songs.

6 and 7 are popular duets from a very famous movie. The year 1958 incidentally, was Mukesh’s comeback into playback singing when all his other ventures failed miserably. He had multiple hits in this year in films like Madhumati, Parvarish, Yahudi, Phir Subah Hogi etc.

8 to 12 are very good songs to listen. 13, I have already written earlier.

14. Well, is it the best duet of the duo. If not, it will definitely be amongst the top 3. A beautiful composition by Suhrid Kar. A 100% chayya geet.

15, 16 and 18 are also enjoyable.

17 will give good completion to 14 in terms of melody.

19, I will repeat what one reader has commented in the post on the blog. Very sweet.

20 to 29 are quite enjoyable songs. They may not be very popular but are not very obscure also. When one hears the first line, one can easily recollect hearing them earlier.

30 and 31 are not as popular as other great songs in the film, especially the soulful solos by Mukesh. But then, they are very well known.

32 and 33 under R D Burman are also well-known songs.

34, the last available and unposted duet is being taken up today.

35 incidentally, was taken up by self like few other songs of the combo.

36. Well, what can I write about it. It is one of the most unique songs in the annals of HFM. The only song sung by father-son duo (along with Sushma Shreshtha). The song was not included in the film. I wanted to have this song as 1000th song of Mukesh on the blog. But Mukesh reaching the 4-digit figure on the blog is very difficult though not impossible. I always knew about the rarity of this song. However, when I was helping Sudhir ji with the availability of this song, I was not aware that he would indeed post it so early.

Anyway, it is now on the blog and known to all. I admire and thank him for covering all facets of the song in his elegant and beautifully written post.

How to reach 1000 for Mukesh on the blog. Well, MGK-II all but rules out the possibility. But there is a small body of Mukesh’s work not included in the compilation and along with it if a few more unavailable songs are unearthed, we may touch the magic figure. I ought to make some extra efforts. Let me see.

37 to 40 are not so popular songs of the duo.

41 and 42 are the last of the 3 duets that the singers sang for O P Nayyar. Looking of the popularity and tunes, I suppose, O P Nayyar could have accommodated Mukesh much more in his compositions, but sadly, all we have is only 3 duets and a very popular solo.

43 is from a well-known film with popular songs including the one under discussion.

44 and 45 are from a Big B’s movie. Incidentally, I had started the inaugural post of the series Mukesh and his Actors – 01 featuring Mukesh’s playback for Amitabh Bacchan.

46, 47 and 48 are a hat-trick of sorts as all the three duets have been covered by self. In fact, a total of 7 duets of the combo have been covered by self including today’s song.

49 is a passable duet unlike 50 which was quite popular.

51 is again a great duet by the combo at almost the fag end of Mukesh’s career.

52 and 53 are well known songs of the era and are popular to this day.

54 is a rather lesser-known song from a film which is well known and had very popular songs.

55 was posted by our Avinash ji and he had beaten me in representing a good Reena Roy song and that too on her birthday. I will deal with him separately on this. 😊

56 is a personal favourite of mine for its catchy tune.

57 was released after Mukesh passed away and surprisingly it remains a popular song after all these decades.

58 and the last song of the combo was covered by self, wherein I covered all songs sung by Mukesh for Naushad Ali for the second time on the blog. Readers may remember that the series Mukesh and his Composers had started with Naushad Ali only. This song no 58 is from the unreleased film Pukar whose 2-3 songs managed to be available in public domain.

Mukesh and Asha Bhosale may not be the first duo that come to the mind as far as duets are concerned, but there is no denying of the fact that they have some glorious songs to their credit. The fact that all songs baring one have been covered on the blog is also an indication of the immense popularity of their songs.

I love songs listed at 1, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 17, 19, 23, 24, 41, 51, 53, 56, 57 very much. I remember possessing a two-cassette pack of the duo probably titled “Rare Gems” and would listen to the songs on repeat mode as they were quite pleasing to the ears.

To conclude the post, I thank our Sadandand ji for giving me a heads-up that 100 songs of Mukesh was a near-possibility when my total songs posted on the blog had touched the 3-mark figure.
We come to today’s last available song (assuming the duet from Rajkumari (1955) may not surface).

It is from the film Sasta Khoon Mehnga Pyar (1970) under the composition by Usha Khanna and lyrics by Asad Bhopali. It is basically a Holi song and since it is last available song of the duo, I had no option but to celebrate Holi a month early on the blog. Usually, multiple Holi songs from different Hindi movies are cherry-picked every year. I am surprised how this song managed to remain hidden. It was probably waiting for my special post. 😊

It is also a nice song, but I am unable to recognize anyone on screen as they may not be popular actors. I hope our Prakash ji will do the needful. I did manage to recognize Tun Tun though. 😊

With this we come to an end of this special post featuring my 100th Mukesh song on the blog. The pleasure is always mine in enlisting Mukesh songs under different categories and artists and this post has given me confidence to cover the pinnacle of Mukesh and his co-singers in terms of numbers, namely the immortal Lata Mangeshkar. It may not appear in the next few posts but will be covered sooner rather than later.

Mukesh’s duets with Asha Bhosale deserved a detailed coverage and I am happy to have accomplished the task.
